MONTREAL --
Liam MacDonald,
Andrew Chase and
Seth Obadia each registered hat-tricks as McGill outlasted the visiting Trent Excalibur 16-14 in a wild, epic battle of undefeated teams playing for first place in the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association East Division standings at Forbes Field, Sunday.
The 30 goals scored equaled the highest total ever in a McGill regular season contest, dating back to a 23-7 conquest over Queen's on Oct. 21, 2007.
It was the eighth straight victory for the division-leading Redmen, who improved their unblemished record to 8-0, four points ahead of Trent (6-1) which holds a game in hand.
The Excalibur, who fielded a lineup featuring four professionals, outshot McGill 26-21. They took early 2-1 and 3-2 leads but McGill rallied to hold a 4-3 advantage after the first quarter. The Redmen extended that to 9-6 by halftime and 11-9 after three. Both teams tallied five goals in the final frame.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Kieran McKay and
Maxime Murdoch with two apiece, while single markers went to
Patrick Turner,
Ian Macleod and
Gardie Harr.
Pacing the Excalibur was
Cam Garlin and
Nick Karam, with four goals apiece. Garlin added three assists to finish with a seven-point soiree.
Cole McWilliams and
Adam Perroni chipped in with two apiece, while singles went to
Nick Chaykowsky and
Jeff Fernandes.
Goaltender
Michael Gallo kicked out 12 of 26 shots for the victory, while losing 'keeper
Austin Cairns was only able to must five saves on 21 shots.
McGill will host The Hill Academy in a non-conference game on Saturday (Oct. 20) at 2 p.m. before concluding the regular season with road games at Queen's (Oct. 27) and Trent (Oct, 28).
