OTTAWA --
Emerson Dohm of West Vancouver, B.C., stroked a two-run single to right-field for the game-winning hit as McGill once again rallied in the final inning and came away with a 7-4 victory over Carleton, Sunday, to capture the Northern Division championship of the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association at Hamilton Yards in the nation's capital.
McGill, which lost the opener of the final series 7-3 to Carleton, forced the rubber match when
Rocky Hroch threw a no-hitter in Game 2, leading the Redmen to an 11-0 whitewash in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc, Que.
The series win marked the fifth straight divisional pennant for McGill, which advances to the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championship tournament in Ottawa, Oct. 18-21, where they will be aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive national title. The Redmen will bring a 29-9-3 overall record, including a 13-3 first-place mark in league play and a 4-2 post-season record.
Carleton led 1-0 after the opening inning and McGill tied it at 1-1 in the fourth. The Ravens added a run in the fifth but McGill knotted the score again, at 2-2 in the sixth, then added five more in the top of the seventh. Carleton responded with two in the bottom of the inning but reliever
Andre Lagarde induced
Spencer Sheldon to ground out to second with two runners on base to end the rally.
Lagarde went the final three innings and was credited with the win. He gave up a pair of runs on three hits, walked three and whiffed two.
Dohm, the designated hitter who was batting clean-up, went 1-for-3 with a walk, one run scored and two RBIs. Second baseman
Domenic DeFelice followed Dohm's key hit with a three-run 3 RBI). Other offensive stars for the Redmen were centrefielder
Sasha Lagarde (3/4, RBI, R, 2B) andright-fielder
Jonathan Duforest (2/2, BB).
McGill starter
Thomas Mienkowski lasted only three innings. He gave up only one hit and one unearned run but walked three and struck out one. He was relieved by
Cole Millinger, who pitched one-third of an inning.
Ravens starter
Derek Harkin last six innings and racked up seven strikeouts. He conceded two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks.
The loss was charged to reliever
Alex Lajeunesse, a junior whose father (Marc) and uncle (Francois) both played hockey for McGill in the mid-1980s. He pitched the final inning and gave up five funs on three hits and three walks.
Both McGill (13-3) and Carleton (12-4) advance to the CCBA Nationals, a six-team tourney, and will be grouped among the top three seeds with UNB (10-6), the Atlantic division champions. These three teams will not meet unless they cross paths in Sunday's playoff round.
McGill departs for the nation's capital on Thursday morning and is tentatively slated to play Acadia (10-6) on Thursday at 12 noon, followed by Concordia (7-9) on Friday at 10 a.m., and Saint Mary's (6-10) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The semifinal and final are both set for Sunday.
