Domenic DeFelice of Richmond, Mass., drove in four runs as McGill clobbered Concordia 19-3 to close out regular season play in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association, Monday, at Gary Carter Field. The Redmen, who finished atop the CCBA Northern Division standings with a 13-3 record, will host the Université de Montréal in a best-of-three semifinal series, slated to begin Oct. 6.
It marked McGill's 15th consecutive win over the Stingers, including playoffs, over a three-year span, dating back to an 8-7 Concordia conquest in extra innings on Oct. 5, 2015.
The Redmen, who only had an 11-7 edge in hits, took advantage of 13 walks, four hit batsmen and two errors, They scored five runs in the first inning, then added seven, four and three runs, respectively, before the mercy rule was invoked after the Stingers batted in the top of the fifth.
DeFelice, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound second baseman, went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs. The third-year economics major drove in runs on a sacrifice fly in the first, a single in the second, a walk in the third, and a double in the fourth.
McGill's offensive output was led led by two hits apiece from DeFelice, junior
Benji Kaiserman of Los Angeles, and
Jared Kersh, a senior from South Salem, N.Y. Kaiserman was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Kersh was 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBIs and scored a pair of runs.
Concordia scored three runs in the second inning, led by
Stephen Sitaras and
Michael Makarios, all driving in runs.
McGill right-handed starter
Cole Millinger pf West Windsor, N.J., was credited with the victory. The management freshman surrendered three runs (one earned) on five hits over three innings, striking out three and walking two.
Rocky Hroch and
Henry Dennis came on from the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.
Stefan Brady took the loss for Concordia. He only lasted 1.1 innings, allowing 11 earned runs on five hits, with seven walks and no strikeouts.
Aside from the upcoming Montreal-McGill playoff series slated for this weekend, second-place Carleton will open their semifinal series against third-place Concordia.
