Martlets stretch streak to seven in college hoops win over Citadins

MONTREAL -- Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., tallied a dozen points and Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., recorded her sixth consecutive "double-double" as No.2-ranked McGill defeated UQAM 61-52 in RSEQ women's basketball at Love Competition Hall on Saturday.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Martlets, who also defeated cellar-dwelling UQAM by a similar score (65-56) on Thursday. McGill improved its record to 42-23 in 65 lifetime meetings with the Citadins.

McGill led 16-14 after the first quarter, 35-31 at halftime and carried a 43-42 edge into the decisive fourth quarter.

Potvin, a point-guard in her second season after transferring from the University of Pittsburgh, also grabbed seven rebounds and led the game in both assists (4) and steals (3). She shot 5-for-13 from the floor, including 1-for-5 from the three-point range, and drained her only free throw.

Kiss-Rusk, a fifth-year senior studying social work, scored 11 points and pulled down a dozen rebounds. The 6-foot-4 centre sank half of her 10 shots from the field and one of two chances from the free-throw line. She was also credited with one steal and played just 23 minutes on the court, her lowest total of the season in league play.

Gladys Hakizimana, a 5-foot-7 guard from Montreal, also reached double figures in scoring with 11 points. The social work junior shot 4-for-9 from the field, including a solid 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and corralled three rebounds. She had a pair of assists and stole one ball.

Jessica Lubin led the Citadins with 14 points and nine rebounds, followed by Alexe Dufresne with 13 points.

McGill shot 42.9 per cent from the field (24/56), including 31.3 on three-pointers (5/16), and was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. UQAM shot 35.3 per cent from the field (18/51), including a dismal 0-for-6 from beyond the arc, and was a solid 16-for-20 on free throws.

The Martlets had a 34-24 margin in rebounds and an 8-7 edge in steals, while their guests had a 15-17 turnover advantage and the only block of the game.

McGill (5-1) next visits Concordia (3-1) on Thursday, Jan. 11. The Citadins (0-6) host Bishop's (2-3) that evening.
