Martlet volleyballers sink Sherbrooke, stretch streak to five

SHERBROOKE, Que. -- Sophomore Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., scored 15 points as eighth-ranked McGill swept Sherbrooke 25-20, 28-26 and 25-18 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Pavillon Univestrie on Friday.

It was the fifth straight win in league play for the Martlets, who have now swept all four of their meetings with the Vert & Or, including one pre-season match-up. The Martlets had a 43-30 advantage in kills. Both teams had seven service aces, while the Vert et Or led 53-43 in digs and 6-3 in blocks.

Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter, recorded 13 kills, one ace and two assisted blocks. She also led the team with 11 digs.

Elisabeth Perrault of Laval, Que., followed with 11 points. The 5-foot-10 middle blocker had 10 kills and an ace, as well as eight digs. Seniors Myriam Robitaille and Emilie Matte de Grasse also reached double-digits with 10.5 points each.

Robitaille, a 6-foot middle blocker from Terrebonne, Que., registered 10 kills and one assisted block, and also had three digs with an assist. Matte de Grasse, a 5-foot-10 power hitter from Montreal, registered five kills and served a game-high five aces. She contributed one assisted block, as well as three digs and an assist.

Erika Cournoyer of Longueuil, Que., rounded out the scoring with six points, courtesy of five kills and two assisted blocks, and chipped in a pair of digs.

"Offensively we're doing a good job," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau. "We have many good hitters and everybody can jump high and be the offensive star on any night. Our offence is much stronger this year.

"It's an advantage because then the blockers on the other side will run after everybody and not necessarily move ahead of time to be with the main hitter," explained Beliveau of having a diversity of scorers. "It also opens the game for us. The main hitter will always have an open block because we can feed everybody, and it's easier to score the ball if you have only one block instead of two."

Beliveau also credited sophomore setter Catherine Duchaine of Montreal, who had 23 assists and three digs, as a game-changer during the tight second set.

"Catherine did a good job when she came in about halfway through the match. She changed a little bit the momentum of the game. Our two setters have two different styles of play, and when she came in she was able to go a little more in the middle, which changed the tempo of the game."

Maude Frechette led Sherbrooke with 11 points.

McGill (10-2), which kept pace with the Montreal Carabins (10-2) atop the RSEQ standings, will host third-place Laval (8-3) on Sunday (Jan. 21) at 1 p.m. at Love Competition Hall. Sherbrooke (2-10) visits Ottawa (3-8) that same afternoon.
