Dogged Dele dines and dashes on divisional rivals in sweet sweep over Stingers

MONTREAL -- Dele Ogundokun, a fifth-year senior from Hamilton, Ont., potted a game-high 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds as sixth-ranked McGill toppled Concordia 91-62 in RSEQ men's basketball, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall.

The 29-point margin of victory was McGill's second-highest ever over Concordia and only surpassed by a 96-56 win Nov. 24, 2016. The Redmen have now won four of the last five match-ups and 14 of the last 21 against the Stingers. Paired with the Martlets' 63-51 win earlier in the day, it marked the first time since 2011 that both McGill teams swept a home-and-home series against Concordia in the same week.

McGill led 29-9 after the first quarter, 45-29 at halftime, and 66-43 after three, then outscored ConU 25-19 in the final stanza. The Redmen had a 38-33 advantage in rebounds and held a favourable 25-14 margin in turnovers. Both sides had eight steals and one block.

"Our effort was consistent," said Redmen head coach David DeAveiro, who upped his career coaching record to 365-232 in 597 games overall with Ottawa and McGill. "We got off to a great start in the first quarter. They were turning the ball over at a high rate and we were getting into the heart of their defence and making good passes outside for some open threes."

Ogundokun, a 6-foot-3, 226-pound guard, saw 25 minutes of court time and was also credited with one steal. He shot a red-hot 6-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range, and was perfect on all five of his free-throws.

"You kind of expect your best players to be your best players," said DeAveiro. "Dele was the MVP of the league (last year) and there's a little bit of pressure on him to do that again this year, so those are the kind of things we expect from Dele and I think he expects them from himself. By no means was his performance a surprise.

"He's finding his rhythm (on three-pointers) a little bit," DeAveiro added. "I think he's found his move to get himself an open three and he's shooting them with a lot more confidence."

Francois Bourque, a former league MVP, followed with a seasonal game-high of 15 points. The fifth-year senior forward from Terrebonne, Que., shot 5-for-11 from the field and 5-for-8 from the charity stripe, corralled eight rebounds and had an assist.

"Frank was a beast on the glass," DeAveiro praised. "He controlled the rebounds and he defended well. Frank really got us going in the third and fourth quarters, cleaning up every rebound and getting us going in transition. He was outstanding today."

Daniel Pieper, a 6-foot-6, 195-pound forward from the Netherlands, shot 5-for-9 from the floor for 10 points. The economics senior also grabbed a pair of rebounds to go along with an assist, one blocked shot and a steal.

"One of the key players for us this week was Daniel," said DeAveiro. "He's played two outstanding games against Concordia and he's a tough match-up for them."

Nicholas Noble led the Stingers with a dozen points.

The Redmen shot 45.6 per cent from the field (31/68), including 42.3 from three-point range (11/26), and were 18-for-24 from the free-throw line. Concordia shot 38.3 per cent from the field (23/60), including a 4-for-21 record from downtown, and made only 57.1 per cent of their freebies (12/21).

Concordia (3-3) takes on Bishop's University (1-5) on Jan. 18. The Redmen (7-1) have a week off before a home-and-home series against the Gaiters. McGill plays BU on the road on Jan. 26, then returns home to play them on Jan. 27.
