MONTREAL --
Goose Bolton of Darien, Conn., netted a hat-trick and added one helper as the McGill men's lacrosse team spanked visiting Carleton 13-3 in the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association opener at Forbes Field, Thursday.
It marked a milestone victory in regular season play for
Tim Murdoch, who now owns a 100-41 record in his 15th season at head coach of the Redmen.
"We had a 9-1 lead at halftime, which gave us an opportunity to substitute freely in the second half and get a look at many of our younger players," said Murdoch, who also improved his overall record to 158-79-2. "We have more depth this year and I was pleased with our distributed scoring and our defence, which played really well."
Other multiple marksmen for McGill were
Liam MacDonald, a freshman from North Vancouver, B.C., who was credited with the game-winner in the second quarter, plus junior
Alexander Linton of Ridgewood, N.J., and junior
Maxime Murdoch (the coach's son) of Montreal, who tallied two goals apiece.
"Our most impressive player tonight was sophomore defenceman
Tanner Baldin, who was a standout at both ends of the field," praised the McGill bench boss. A native of Brantford, Ont., Baldin scored once, added an assist and was a stifling force against Carleton's attackmen.
Rounding out the scoring with singles was junior
Cal Callahan of Glenview, Ill., freshman
Colton Campbell of Boulder, Col., and
Patrick Turner, a freshman from Stouffville, Ont.
Replying for Carleton was
Noah Hoselton of Ottawa with two and
Nick Penteluke of Niagara, Ont., with one.
Senior goalkeeper
William Waesche of Greenwich, Conn., started between the pipes for the Redmen and collected the victory. He allowed just one goal before being replaced at halftime by
Michael Gallo, a rookie from Glen Rock, N.J., who blanked Carleton in his 20-minute stint. Freshman
David Pelliccione of Woodbridge, Ont., played the final stanza and conceded a pair of goals in his 20-minute segment.
Ravens' netminder
Quinn Tucker went the distance and took the loss, allowing all 13 goals.
Carleton (0-1) returns home to host Queen's (0-0) on Saturday at noon.
McGill, which is coming off an 11-1 first-place finish in the CUFLA East and a stunning playoff upset loss to Ottawa, is now 1-0 this season. They will host the Nipissing Lakers from northern Ontario with back to-back games at Percival Molson Stadium this weekend, on Saturday at 5 p.m., followed a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
