Kersh sparks 20th consecutive win for baseball Redmen

MONTREAL -- Infielder Jared Kersh of South Salem, N.Y., went 3-for-4 and had a game-high three runs batted in as McGill doubled the Université de Montréal 6-3 in a Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association game at Ahuntsic Parc, Tuesday. At the halfway point in the 16-game season, the Redmen improved to 8-0 in league play and have now won 20 consecutive contests dating back to last year.

McGill, which trailed 2-1 after the first inning, roared back to lead 4-2 after the third and 6-2 after five before the Carabins scored once in their final at bat.

Kersh, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound shortstop, drove in an RBI single in the first inning, stroked a run-scoring double in the third and added another RBI-double in the fifth. The 19-year-old economics sophomore also scored one run and was credited with assists on four put-outs.

McGill ran wild on the base paths with seven stolen bases, including four by Andre Lagarde of Pierrefonds, Que., who went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice. Also among the four Redmen who had mult-hit soirees was Troy Shepherd (2/3, BB, R) of Boston, Mass., and Emerson Dohm (2/4, R, 2 RBI) of Vancouver, B.C.

The Carabins had six hits in the game, with two apiece from Pascal Grégoire and Frédéric Charlebois.

Bobby Finnie, a 19-year-old management freshman from The Woodlands, in Texas, started on the mound and earned the win for McGill. He threw four innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with two walks and three strike-outs. He was relieved by David Juechter of Hyack, N.Y.,  who allowed one run and scattered one hit and four walks over the final three innings,

Carabins starter Antoine Beaudoin lasted only two innings and took the loss. He surrendered three runs -- two of them earned -- on three hits and a pair a walks.
