MONTREAL --
Phil Saad struck out 14 and was three outs away from pitching a no-hitter but settled for the next best thing, a complete game one-hitter McGill clobbered the Universite de Montréal 8-0 at Ahuntsic Park, Monday.
The victory improving the McGill's record to 7-0 in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association and extended their regular season win streak to 19 games since last year. It was the fourth straight loss for U de M after starting the season with five consecutive wins.
Right-fielder
Alexandre Rousseau, spoiled the no-hitter bid by leading off the seventh inning with a hard ground ball single to left field but he was stranded after Saad, an economics freshman, induced a fly ball to right and struck out the final two hitters.
Saad, a 6-foot-4, 210-pouind righty who also whiffed 14 batters in his CCBA debut last week against Concordia, threw 94 pitches, 68 for strikes, and walked only one as his record improved to 2-0.
Vincent Ally, his mound opponent, took the loss for Montréal. He pitched four innings, allowing six runs and eight hits.
The Redmen scored once in each of the first three innings, then tallied three times in the fourth and once more in the fifth and seventh
Eight of the nine Redmen who played had a hit but the only multi-hit player was centrefielder
Sasha Lagarde, who batted leadoff and went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
McGill (7-0) will cross paths again with Montreal (5-4) on Tuesday (Sept. 19) in a 7:30 pm start at Ahuntsic Park.
