OTTAWA -- Infielder
Dominic DeFelice collected four of McGill's 18 hits en route to a 12-7 victory for a doubleheader sweep over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the nation's capital on Sunday. The result, combined with a 13-3 win in the opener, improved the Redmen record to 6-0 on the campaign and extended their win streak to 18 regular season games in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, dating back to last season when they won their third consecutive national championship.
DeFelice, who also turned a double-play at second base and batting eighth, went 4-for-4 at the plate, with three RBIs and a run scored. The 19-year-old economics sophomore from Richmond, Mass., singled in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.
Other multi-hit performances were registered by
Andre Lagarde (3),
Jake Guggenheimer (3),
Bowen DuPhily (2) and
Camden Lawhead (2). Guggenheimer and Lagarde also drove in three runs apiece.
McGill, which sits atop the CCBA Northern Division, exploded for four runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed. They added three more runs in the third before Ottawa got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to make the score 7-1. The Redmen added two more in the sixth and three in the seventh, sandwiched by a six-run inning by Ottawa in the bottom of the sixth.
McGill starter
Jack Pantalena collected the victory, his third in as many starts. He scattered one hit and allowed one run over five innings, while striking out seven and walking seven. He was relieved by
Zachary Salsburg-Frank and
Amir McGettrick to help finish off the victory.
The Redmen, who have outscored opponents 66-16 in their six league games, haven't lost a regular season contest in over a year, dating back to Sept. 10, 2016 when they dropped a 7-4 decision to Ottawa. McGill will now face the Montreal Carabins (5-3) in a two-game series at Ahuntsic Park, Sept. 18-19, with both contests slated for 7:30 starts.
