Concordia gains upper hand in first showdown with football Redmen

MONTREAL -- Quarterback Trenton Miller threw a school record six touchdown passes to lead Concordia to a 68-16 victory over the visiting McGill Redmen before a Homecoming crowd of about 4,000 at Concordia Stadium, Saturday .

It was the most points ever scored by Concordia against McGill, surpassing a pair of 58-30 decisions in 2007 and 2011. The Stingers 52-point spread was also their largest over their cross-town rivals, and their biggest margin of victory over the Redmen, surpassing a 45-0 shutout in 1999 and a 46-1 result in 2003.

The Stingers led 30-0 after the opening quarter, 51-7 at halftime and 68-7 after three. McGill outscored Concordia 9-0 in the final quarter. Despite the lopsided score early on, the Stingers attempted five third-down conversions, implemented a fake punt play and had a successful onside kickoff.

Miller broke the team standard set in 1998 when quarterback Sean Hoas threw five TDs in a game versus Laval. The conference record is seven by Laval quarterback Hugo Richard who picked apart the Bishop's Gaiters' defence on Oct. 19, 2014.

Miller connected with wide receiver Sam Nadon for TD strikes of 14, 15 and 16 yards. He also found Vince Alessandrini for a five-yard major, Jarryd Taylor for a 12-yard score and Yanic Lessard on a 44-yard pass-and-run play. Miller completed 23 of 31 passes for 472 yards to guide a Stinger attack that rolled up 30 first downs, 589 yards of net offence  and nine touchdowns. McGill had 24 first downs, 377 yards of offence and two TDs. Concordia finally called off the dogs in the final stanza and replaced their starting pivot with Colin Sequera, who went 1-for-4 passing.

The Redmen were missing a number of injured starters, including receiver Remi Bertellin, their all-purpose yards leader, and defensive lineman Andrew Seinet-Spaulding, their top defensive player. They dressed 17 freshmen, 17 sophomores, nine juniors and five seniors. Their 48-man dress-list combined to commit seven turnovers, including two interceptions, two fumbles lost and three on ineffective third-down attempts. McGill, which had two bad snaps and fumbled on a kickoff return, was assessed 15 penalties for 118 yards, compared to Concordia, which was flagged 19 times for 147 yards. The Stingers had four quarterbacks sacks, compared to McGill's two.

Among the few bright spots for the Redmen was the play of three rookies -- back-up quarterback Dimitrios Sinodinos, newly inserted receiver Emile Taillefer and running back Daniel Adesegun -- along with sophomore receiver Jeremy Sauvageau.

Sinodinos came on in the second half -- in relief of beleaguered starter Frederic Paquette-Perrault -- and completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 226 yards and one TD in his U SPORTS debut.Taillefer, a CEGEP all-star with College Lionel-Groulx last year, who joined the team two days before the kickoff, hauled in a game-high nine receptions for 114 yards. Adesegun rushed 11 times for 83 yards and Sauvageau caught four passes for 99 yards and both McGill TDs.

Paquette-Perrault, a sophomore who was making his 10th career start, was only 9-of-17 passing for 85 yards, one TD and two picks.

Among the other Concordia players who had an impact was running back Jean-Guy Rimpel who carried the ball 18 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He now has five TDs on the season. The ninth and final touchdown of the game came on a four-yard run from Glody Musangu.

Rounding out the scoring was kicker Andrew Stevens who made all nine converts and kicked a 37-yard field goal. Redmen kicker Findlay Brown, who hadn't mssed a field-goal in his two previous games, missed all three attempts, from distances of 24, 44 and 34.

McGill, which dropped to 1-2, will host the No.1-ranked Montreal Carabins (3-0) on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. Concordia (2-1) travels to Quebec City to meet Laval (2-1) next Sunday at 1 p.m. in a game that will be televised by TVA Sports.

REDMEN RAP: Safety Jean-Philippe Hudon led the Redmnen defence with seven total tackles, including one QB sack... LB Dane Wagner had 5.5 tackles and one fumbler recovery... DB Vincent Dethier had the team's only interception.
