MONTREAL -- Casey Carangelo made a last-second layup and completed a three point-play with a free-throw as the visiting St. Francis College Terriers from Brooklyn, N.Y., rallied with four seconds remaining to come away with a 76-74 victory over McGill in a cross-border hoops classic at Love Competition Hall, Tuesday.

McGill had a chance for a buzzer-beater but Gladys Hakizimana missed a last-gasp trey attempt for what would've been her first points of the soiree. The loss ended the team's eight-game win streak, dating back to last year when the Martlets cruised to their first ever national championship.

Carangelo finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, but was one basket shy of the game-high 21 potted by teammate Jade Johnson.  The Martlets were led by 5-foot-10 seniors Frederique Potvin and Marie-Love Michel, who had 20 and 18 points, respectively. Fellow McGillian Stephanie Guinois-Cote contributed 15 points in just 16 minutes of court-time and sophomore Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Martlets were in foul trouble down the stretch, as Geraldine Cabillo-Abante fouled out and two others were on the verge --Tshikudi-Tshila and Guinois-Cote --  with four apiece.

McGill was also without the services of scoring leader Alex Kiss-Rusk, who was in transit from Taipei City, where she helped the Canadian national development team post a 3-3 record to finish seventh at the FISU Summer Games in Chinese Taipei. She was third in team scoring (8.0 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.5).

McGill led 15-14 after the opening quarter and seemed to be in control with a 32-25 advantage at halftime. The teams each dropped 25 points in the third stanza but St. Francis Brooklyn outscored McGill 26-17 down the stretch.

The Martlets shot 39.1 per cent from the floor (27/69) and 35.3 from the three-point arc (12/34). they made eight of 11 free-throws. The Terriers
shot a spectacular 60 per cent from the field (27/450. They nailed five of 10 threes and 17 of 24 freebies.

McGill had a 31-28 edge in rebounds and a favorable 25-19 advantage in turnovers but the Terriers led in steals (9-6) and blocked shots (2-0).

St. Francis Brooklyn concluded their five-day Canadian tour with a 3-1 record, including victories over a CEGEP Selects team (69-46) and Bishop's (70-64 in overtime). The sole setback was to Concordia (84-65).

McGill, which dropped to 1-1 in preseason play against NCAA Div. 1 teams, will have a one-month break before hosting Regina in more preseason action on Sept. 29
