BBALL (M) FINAL 8: Ravens fly past Redmen, McGill to play for bronze

HALIFAX, N.S. – National player of the year Connor Wood scored a game-high 20 points as the second-seeded Carleton Ravens flew past No. 3 McGill 74-58 in semifinal battle at the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS men's basketball Final Eight championship tournament, Saturday, at Scotiabank Place.

The loss ended McGill's win streak at 10 and moved the Redmen into the bronze medal game where they will face host Dalhousie on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (Eastern) live on http://tv1.bellaliant.ca/

Jenning Leung, a 6-foot-1 guard from the Philippines, tallied a team-high 13 points for McGill. He was 4-for-10 from the field and 4-for-9 from downtown. The senior co-captain was also credited with two points from the line and three rebounds, two assists and one block.

Teammate and co-captain Dele Ogundokun, playing with a badly sprained ankle, notched 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a game-high 38 minutes of playing time, while senior Michael Peterkin posted 11 points, three rebounds and one assist.

The Redmen kept pace with Carleton early, on the strength of Leung's perimeter shooting. He went 2-for-3 from three-point range as McGill went up 10-9 just over halfway through the first quarter. They hung tight and trailed 18-13 after the opening frame and 26-23 midway through the second quarter. Carleton then used a killer 17-3 run to close out the first half and take a 43-26 lead into the break.

McGill found a rhythm from the perimeter in the third quarter, sinking four treys to cut the Ravens lead to as little as eight. However, Carleton did not waver and bolstered the lead back up to 60-47 entering the fourth. The Ravens closed out the game with a 14-11 point advantage in the final stanza.

"We're disappointed in the loss, but when you're building a program, you're building small steps," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro, whose troops outscored Carleton 32-31 in the second half. "It was important for us to go out in the second half and compete and try and make it a game and I thought we did that. We had it down to 10 or maybe eight at one point, but you can't make mistakes - you give a couple offensive boards, then they throw it out and make open threes. Those kill your momentum."

Wood, a 6-foot-4 guard from Guelph, Ont., went 7-for-14 from the field, including a scorching 4-for-7 effort from downtown. The psychology major was also 2-for-2 from the foul line and pulled down five rebounds.

McGill, which was third in the nation in rebounding margin (+10.6 per game), met their match down low, facing the number one rebounding margin team in the Ravens (+17.1 per game). Carleton had a 41-34 advantage on the glass including 14-7 edge under the offensive boards. The Ravens also had a 6-3 lead in steals and a 11-9 difference in turnovers.

The Redmen shot 37.5 per cent from the floor (18/48) and went 8-for-26 from three-point range, while Carleton shot 40.0 (26/65) and sank seven of 19 trey attempts.

"We, for whatever reason, upped the intensity defensively," said Ravens head coach Dave Smart. "Sometimes it helps when they're a little bit into their bench and you up the intensity defensively and all of a sudden we get some stops, we got a couple turnovers and then we get out in transition."

The Ravens will now battle No.1 Ryerson for a chance at their seventh straight national championship. They will also be looking for revenge, as the Rams knocked off the Ravens in last week's OUA Wilson Cup Final. The game is set for 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday and can be seen live on Sportsnet 360

REDMEN RAP: This was the first meeting in over six years since the last encounter between the Redmen and Ravens, which was an 81-60 win for Carleton at the House-Laughton Tournament. The two sides have met eight times since the second turn of the century, with the majority of their matchups coming prior to the Dave Smart era (i.e. pre-1999). Carleton owns a 25-16 record all time against the Redmen and have won seven consecutive games against McGill overall. Carleton is 7-0 against teams from the RSEQ conference at the Final 8 since 2001, and the last time the Ravens met an RSEQ opponent at the semifinal stage came in 2003 against Laval – a 57-54 win.
