MONTREAL--
Jenning Leung collected a game-high 25 points and
Avery Cadogan chipped in 21 off the bench as No.8-ranked McGill cruised to a 99-70 victory over visiting UQAM in RSEQ men's hoops before a Beach Night crowd sporting nifty shades at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.
It was the highest offensive output for the Redmen in 122 league games, since a 102-88 home-court victory over Bishop's on Nov. 20, 2009. McGill has now won 18 of the past 22 contests against the Citadins and holds a lifetime 36-24 head-to-head advantage overall, including a 22-9 home record vs. UQAM.
The Redmen, who had a colossal 41-25 advantage in rebounding, managed to reach the 20-point plateau in all four quarters. They led 24-11 after the opening stanza, then outscored UQAM 31-19 in the second and 23-17 in the third before emptying most of the bench in the final quarter, which they lost 28-21.
"There isn't much to complain about," admitted McGill bench boss
David DeAveiro, who improved to 136-94 overall at McGill since taking over seven years ago. "We moved the ball well, we shot the ball well and we played good defence. We got open looks and didn't force anything."
Leung, a 20-year-old psychology senior, was lights-out from the floor going 8-for-12 and hitting an impressive six of nine three-point attempts. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound point-guard who hails from The Philippines, was also 3-for-5 from the foul-line and was credited with four assists and a pair of steals.
Cadogan, a shooting-guard from Winnipeg, Man., was also hot, going 8-for-14 from the field, including a 4-for-8 performance from downtown. The sociology junior notched five rebounds, two steals and one assist.
"Avery and Jenning are two of our best shooters and we found them good looks tonight," noted DeAveiro. "They were ready to catch and shoot and they knocked them down."
Daniel Pieper was the third Redmen to reach double digits in scoring with 11 points. The economics junior from Amsterdam also added three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
The Citadins had three of their own in double digits with
Greishe Clerjuste leading the way at 23 points.
Misi Boye and
Ibrahima Sylla -- the younger brother of former Martlet start
Mariam Sylla -- added 19 and 10, respectively.
McGill shot a fiery 50.7 per cent from the field (36/71), went 15-for-35 from three-point range and sank 12 of 19 from the line (63.2). UQAM shot 37.9 per cent from the floor (22/58) and 9-for-21 from beyond the arc. They went 17-for-25 from the line.
The Redmen had 13 more field-goal attempts than the Citadins and a 40-18 margin in points in the paint. They also held a 23-20 advantage in turnovers and a 48-25 edge in points off the bench.
McGill is now 10-3 in conference play with three games left to play. They will prepare for a potential first-place showdown against Concordia (8-4) at Loyola campus Feb.16 and can clinch their fifth consecutive regular season pennant with a victory. Before then, however, the Stingers will battle UQAM (7-6) on the road later this weekend and could move within two points of McGill.
