Kiss-Rusk orders up another double-double as Martlet cagers vex V-Reds vividly

LENNOXVILLE, Que. -- Senior Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., registered her fourth consecutive  "double-double" as No.2 ranked McGill rallied from an early seven-point deficit to upend the UNB V-Reds 76-66 in the final round of the Bishop's Holiday Tournament, Saturday.

Combined with Friday's 72-61 win over Ryerson, the Martlets finished with an unblemished 2-0 record but had to share the tourney spotlight with the host Gaiters, who finished with an identical record after victories over UNB (97-93 in 2OT) and the Rams (75-61).

McGill spotted UNB a 7-0 lead then roared back to take a 20-11 lead after the opening quarter. The V-Reds answered that with a 22-13 advantage in the second stanza to knot the score at 33-33 at halftime. But McGill roared back to win the third 27-21 and then took the final quarter 16-12.

Kiss-Rusk, who scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, was named as McGill's player of the game and merited a spot on the all-tournament team along with teammate Frederique Potvin. In the two tourney contests, the 6-foot-4 centre averaged 35 minutes of court-time and tallied 30 points with 28 rebounds, eight blocked shots, eight assists and one steal. She shot 55 per cent from the field (11/20) and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Potvin, a social work senior from Ste. Julie, Que., who had 15 points against UNB, finished the weekend with 27 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks, a half-dozen steals and a pair of blocks. The 5-foot-10 guard shot 41.4 per cent from the floor (12/29), made eight of 18 treys (44.4%) and sank five of eight from the line.

The dynamic duo were among four Martlets to reach double digits against UNB, along with junior guards Geraldine Cabillo-Abante (16 pts) and Gladys Hakizimana (13). Rounding out the scoring for McGill was freshman Charlotte Clayton (8) and senior Marie-Love Michel (6).

UNB also had four players in double figures, with Laura Kaye (17), Nicole Esson (14), Mikaela Dodig (10) and Emily MacLeod (10).

McGill shot 40 per cent from the field (28/70), 39.1 from beyond the arc (9/23) and drained all 11 of their freebies. UNB countered with 36.5 per cent from the floor (23/63), 33.3 from downtown (4/12) and 69.6 from the line (16/23).

Both teams pulled down 43 rebounds with McGill holding a favourable 15-11 advantage in turnovers.

The Martlets, who improved to 13-3 overall, will resume their regular season schedule shortly after the New Year when they confront UQAM (0-4) in a home-and-home series. McGill, which sits atop the RSEQ conference with a 3-1 record, plays at UQAM on Thursday, Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. before hosting the Citadins on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 4 p.m.
