MONTREAL -- The seventh-ranked Universite de Montreal Carabins were kept off the scoresheet for 103 minutes but exploded for three goals in overtime to blank McGill 3-0 in an RSEQ women's soccer semifinal, Friday, at Terrain Vincent d'Indy.
The Carabins, who ended McGill's campaign rather abruptly, advance to both the Quebec provincial final and the U SPORTS national championship, along with No.1-ranked Laval, the defending national champs, who blanked Sherbrooke 2-0 in the league's other semifinal.
"It was a difficult loss but... we played well and we played hard," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, who owns a 39-35-16 record in 90 games overall during his five seasons behind the bench. "It's not as if we didn't play well and lost the game and finished the season on that note. We actually finished on a good 90 minutes -- 0-0 against Montreal, one of the best teams in the country -- and we fought hard."
Through three games this season, the Martlets held Montreal -- a team that averaged 2.64 goals scored per game -- to just one goal in regulation time.
Leîla Boudjelal scored the game-winner 104 minutes into the game, just before the end of the first of two 15-minute extra halves that were tacked on when regulation time failed to declare a victor. Her shot rang off the crossbar, then bounced off the ground into the arms of McGill goalkeeper
Sarah Dubois and just barely crossed the goal-line in the process.
Catherine Proulx then added a pair of insurance markers in the 106th and 113th minutes to prevent a McGill comeback in the second segment of the extra session.
"The girls fought hard," said Valdes. "The referee let them play quite a bit so it became pretty physical out there. Every time we tried to make a couple of passes we'd end up getting pushed around and hit pretty hard, so we couldn't really move the ball as efficiently as we would've liked and we ended up defending quite a bit. But the girls maintained their focus, didn't get too frustrated with that, and limited the damage.
"We played hard and fought to the end but after their first goal in the overtime, we started pushing players more offensively up-field, and then gave up a counter-attack for their second goal."
The Carabins had a 26-9 advantage in shots toward the net, including an 11-3 margin on target. Montreal had a 13-3 edge in corner kicks. The game featured 25 fouls, with 15 of them called against McGill. Two yellow cards were assessed, including one to Martlet senior
Anais Robert in the 76th minute of play.
U de M goalkeeper
Claudia Dubé-Trempe, who was shown a yellow card in the 95th minute, made three saves to earn the clean sheet, while Martlet senior
Sarah Dubois of Edmonton registered eight saves in a losing cause.
"I'd like to thank our graduating players --
Justine Enns,
Stefania Folino,
Claudia Agozzino,
Alexandra Tinfow,
Anais Robert and
Lisa Perrett -- for their time and commitment to the program," Valdes concluded.
The Martlets finished with a 7-7-4 overall record, including exhibition and postseason contests.
