First-half kicking clout by Carabins concludes campaign for soccer Redmen

MONTREAL -- Louis-Philippe Simard earned a four-save shutout and the No.2 ranked Universite de Montreal Carabins scored three first-half markers en route to a 3-0 home-field victory over visiting McGill in an RSEQ men's soccer semifinal at Terrain Vincent d'Indy, Friday.

The division-leading Carabins will host third-seeded UQAM in the league championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Citadins pulled off a 2-1 overtime upset against second-seeded Laval in the other semifinal.

U de M exploded for two goals in less than two minutes, when Heikel Jarras tallied in the 33rd minute of play and Mouad Ouzane made it 2-0 in the 34th minute. A dozen minutes later and just seconds before halftime, Frederic Lajoie-Gray gave the Carabins an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Playing without suspended striker Mohamed Kleit, a fifth-year senior who incurred a red card in the previous game, McGill was challenged to muster any offence. The Carabins finished with a lopsided 33-7 advantage in shots toward the goal, including a 12-4 margin on net. They also had an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.

The game featured 18 fouls -- including 11 by Montreal -- and two yellow cards issued to McGill in the 35th (Sanchit Gupta) and 61st (Mederic Gervais) minutes.

Goalkeeper Antoine Marchal, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Montreal, made nine saves in a losing cause for the Redmen, who finished with a 6-9-3 record overall.

It marked the final varsity game for five McGill seniors, including team captain Davide Salvoni, a defender from St. Leonard, Que., and a fourth-year physical education major. Others included midfielder Michael McIntyre, a physical education major from Pte. Claire, Que., defender Alexander Lamonte, an accounting major from Etobicoke, Ont., and the aforementioned Kleit, from Outremont, Que., who will graduate with a degree in electrical engineering.
