Stingers pull No.6 Redmen back to reality with upset of the week in college hoops

MONTREAL -- Ken Beaulieu and Henderson Charles each scored 13 points as unranked Concordia surprised No.6 McGill 70-58 in RSEQ men's basketball in front of 788 noisy fans in the annual Pots & Pans game, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall. It was the largest McGill home crowd since March 11, 2016 when a school record of 1,023 attended the conference semifinal against Laval.

The Redmen had a 19-15 lead after the opening frame but Concordia tied things up 25-25 at the half and carried a 46-41 edge into the fourth quarter, then outscored the Redmen 24-17 down the stretch.

"What went wrong was that Concordia played outstanding today," conceded McGill bench boss David DeAveiro, who refused to make excuses as his troops had played at UQAM two days earlier while the Stingers had a week of preparation. "Their defence, their small line-up, all the switching, they gave us problems today. So hats off to them, they were well-prepared and we weren't ready to deal with all of the things that they were doing quite yet."

Beaulieu paired his points with two assists, a block, three steals and eight rebounds. Ricardo Monge and Nicholas Noble also reached double figures for the Stingers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

McGill senior Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., posted game-highs in both points and rebounds with 17 and nine, respectively, but it wasn't enough to lead his team past a tricky Stingers defence. The 6-foot-3, 226-pound guard shot 7-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-8 from three-point range. He also stole three balls.

What really hurt the Redmen was dismal shooting, normally their strong point. They connected on just 39.3 per cent from the field (22/56) and only went 5-for-21 from beyond the arc. They were worse from the free-throw line, making just 52.9 per cent of their attempts (9/17).

Concordia shot 42.6 percent from the field (26/61), making seven of 18 from downtown, and shooting 11-for-14 from the charity stripe (78.6 per cent). McGill had a 2-1 edge in blocks while the Stingers had a 9-8 advantage in steals and a 22-23 difference in turnovers. Both teams pulled down 30 rebounds.

The Redmen (2-1) will close out the first semester on Nov. 25 when they travel to Bishop's (1-2) in an 8 p.m. tip-off. Concordia (2-1) hosts UQAM (0-2) that same day.
