Gladys Hakizimana of Montreal and
Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., each tallied 16 points as third-ranked McGill defeated UQAM 67-52 in their RSEQ women's basketball home opener at the Centre Sportif, Thursday.
The win evened McGill's record at 1-1 on the season as they improved to 40-23 in 63 lifetime head-to-head meetings with the Citadins.
The Martlets had a 17-15 edge after the first quarter, which was narrowed to 25-24 at halftime, but fell behind 40-39 after three before dominating the final frame, 28-12.
McGill shot 40.4 per cent from the field (23/57), including an impressive 46.2 per cent rate from beyond the three-point arc (6/13), and was successful on 15 of 18 free-throws.
Hakizimana, a 5-foot-7 guard, shot an efficient 4-for-5 from the field, including a 3-for-4 mark from three-point range, and drained all five of her free-throws. The social work junior corralled three rebounds and had four assists, one steal and a block. Hakizimana netted every one of her fourth quarter attempts, when she potted 13 points to lead McGill's come-from-behind victory.
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre, sank half her 14 shots from the field and was perfect on two chances from the charity stripe. The fifth-year social work senior pulled down eight rebounds, including five in the defensive zone, and registered three steals.
Marie-Love Michel, a 5-foot-9 senior winger from Montreal, followed with 13 points. She shot 5-for-14 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line and grabbed four rebounds.
Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. The 5-foot-10 guard shot 3-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-5 from downtown, and was 2-for-3 on free-throws. She gathered four defensive rebounds, blocked one shot, had five assists and stole a game-high seven balls.
Jessica Lubin led the Citadins with 17 points, along with eight rebounds.
The Martlets had a 27-25 rebounding edge, a 14-8 margin in steals and a 13-17 difference in turnovers, while both teams managed a pair of blocked shots. UQAM shot 34.7 per cent from the field (17/49), including a 2-for-9 rate from beyond the arc (22.2 per cent), and was 16-for-20 from the line.
McGill (1-1) hosts Concordia (2-0) in a first-place showdown which will also be the third annual Pots & Pans game on Saturday (Nov. 18) at 4 p.m. in Love Competition Hall. The Citadins (0-2) will host Laval (1-1) on Nov. 23.
