Kiss-Rusk gives Blues double-double, toil and trouble in college hoops


MONTREAL -- Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., registered her third consecutive "double-double" as the McGill Martlets toppled Toronto 78-58 in their second game of the Redbird Classic women's basketball tournament, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall.

The Martlets shot a stellar 50.8 per cent from the field (31/61), including 38.9 per cent from beyond the arc (7/18), and went 9-for-11 on their free-throw attempts.

Toronto took a 16-14 lead after the opening quarter but McGill bounced back to hold a narrow 30-27 advantage at halftime, then widened the gap to 51-43 before a dominant 27-15 final frame.

Kiss-Rusk, who graduated with a psychology degree last spring but has returned for a fifth year to study social work, scored 20 points and corralled 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-4 centre shot 10-for-15 from the field and chipped in three assists, three blocks and a pair of steals.

Marie-Love Michel and Gladys Hakizimana, both from Montreal, each had 17 points for McGill. Michel, a 5-foot-9 winger, shot 5-for-8 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. The physical education senior also pulled down eight rebounds, stole four balls and had one assist. Hakizimana, a 5-foot-7 guard, shot 6-for-8 from the field, including a 4-for-5 performance from three-point range, and was perfect on one free throw. The social work junior grabbed five rebounds and had four steals.

Sarah Bennett paced the Varsity Blues with 16 points, followed by teammate Rahshida Atkinson with 15.

The Martlets had a 40-26 margin in rebounds, a 12-7 edge in steals and a 3-0 difference in blocks, while Toronto had a 20-15 turnover advantage.

The Varsity Blues shot 37.1 per cent (23/62) from the floor, 5-for-19 from three-point range (26.3 per cent) and were 7-for-15 on free throws (46.7 per cent).

In earlier tournament action, Queen's defeated St. Francis Xavier 74-57. Toronto (0-2 in the tournament) will play St. FX (0-2) at 10 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 22).
McGill (2-0) tips off against Queen's (2-0) at 2 p.m. that afternoon.
