NEW HAVEN, Conn. --
Sidonie Chard of Kingston, Ont., and
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., each registered a goal and an assist as visiting McGill doubled Yale 4-2 in women's preseason hockey at Ingalls Rink, Saturday.
The Martlets outshot their hosts 31-18 and improved their lifetime record over the Bulldogs to 11-6-2.
"Yesterday (in a 6-1 loss to Harvard) we played like we just got off the bus and today we played a very high-energy, well-structured hockey game," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "We had a real good meeting before the game -- we had some goals in the game and the players stuck with the plan from start to finish. It was a 60-minute game today."
Chard, a 5-foot-6 sophomore forward, assisted on
Olivia Ramos's opening goal at 6:17 of the first period then closed out the scoring at 11:20 of the third.
Downie-Landry, a psychology sophomore, was involved in both second-period goals and now has nine markers in nine preseason contests.
Emma Vlasic tied things up at 1-1 for Yale with a first-period power-play goal at 8:48 and teammate
Jordan Chancellor put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 at 10:31.
The Martlets dominated the second frame with one-sided 13-2 margin on the shot clock.
Olivia Atkinson, a junior forward from Oakville, Ont., scored a power-play marker just 105 seconds into the period to even the score at 2-2 and Downie-Landry regained McGill's lead at 12:20.
"The line of Downie-Landry, Atkinson and
Marie-Philip Lavoie was very good today," praised Smith. "Lots of offensive zone time."
Chard's tally was the only goal of the third.
Martlets goaltender
Rachelle Champion of East York, Ont., made 16 saves on 18 shots for her first win of the season in three appearances thus far.
"She wasn't tested much but made the saves when she had to," said Smith of the 5-foot-7 sophomore, who didn't allow any goals after the first period. "She settled into it, so that was good to see."
As is often the case with NCAA opponents, Yale deployed three goaltenders with each getting one period of play.
Kyra O'Brien started and stopped nine of 10 shots. She was relieved by
Tera Hofmann, who allowed two goals on 13 shots in the second period and was saddled with the loss.
Gianna Meloni had seven saves on eight shots in the final frame.
McGill was 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The Martlets wrap up their Ivy League NCAA tour against Dartmouth at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 15). Yale begins their regular season at Rochester Institute of Technology on Oct. 20.
