HANOVER, N.H. --
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., netted two goals and a pair of assists as McGill dominated the NCAA's Dartmouth College 7-2 in women's hockey exhibition play at Thompson Arena on Sunday.
The Martlets managed a massive 40 shots on goal, compared to 22 by the Big Green.
"I liked our game," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith, whose troops won two of their three games versus NCAA opponents on the cross-border road trip. "Third game in three days and we still had lots of energy. We needed to play a four-line game and we did -- we had four lines going and it made all the difference. I liked pretty much every aspect of how we played and our transition game was effective. It's really builds our confidence to go through the challenges that we faced this weekend in terms of the learning and development that's gone on. It's been a great preseason and now we're excited to get started with our conference play next Saturday."
The Martlets posted a 5-5 record in a challenging preseason schedule, including a 3-1 mark against Canadian university opponents.
Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-8 forward, tallied the Martlets' first of the afternoon at 4:43 of the opening frame, putting an early end to Dartmouth's only lead of the game just 53 seconds after it began. She closed the scoring with an unassisted power-play goal at 19:41 of the third.
"She's always had good skills and now she's learned to play with a little more structure in her game," said Smith of the psychology sophomore. "I think it's really helped her to create more opportunities. And she can shoot the puck, so if she gets an opportunity there's a good chance that good things are going to happen.
"Our players are all excited about the opportunity (to take a leading role in the absence of graduated stars
Melodie Daoust and
Gabrielle Davidson, who finished their careers among the Martlets' top-10 all-time scorers)," added Smith. "I'm not sure they feel any added pressure. As much as we miss Gabby and Mélo, it's created opportunity for other players like Jade, and Jade has really stepped up."
Rookie
Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., put McGill ahead with a power-play marker at 10:27 of the first, and fellow freshman
Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., followed it up at 13:38.
Kate Landers got one back for the Big Green at 17:50 to make it 3-2 going into the intermission, but it proved to be their last.
Kellyane Lecours, a rookie from Victoriaville, Que., opened the second period scoring unassisted at 5:32 and
Olivia Atkinson of Oakville, Ont., made it 5-2 at 14:53.
Team captain
Alison MacKenzie, a defenceman from Osgoode, Ont., potted a power-play goal at 13:53 of the third, which was followed by Downie-Landry's second of the day.
Marie-Philip Lavoie of Pohenegamook, Que., and Atkinson also recorded multi-point evenings in a game that saw nine different players involved in the scoring. Lavoie earned three assists while Atkinson had one helper to go with her second-period goal.
"I think that's what it's going to take," noted Smith. "We're going to need to have everybody going and certainly in these games this weekend I think we had that."
Jennifer Costa had opened the scoring for Dartmouth at 3:50 of the first.
"In the first period we were a little bit loose and gave up a couple of odd-man rushes but then we tightened it up pretty well after that," Smith explained. "They got a few shots in the second because we had some penalties but overall 5-on-5, after the first period we were pretty good in terms of limiting their opportunities."
Rookie netminder
Amanda Hadwen of Ottawa tended the Martlets goal and saved 20 of 22 shots.
Christie Honor started in net for the Big Green and was saddled with the loss after turning away 10 pucks through 28 minutes, 28 seconds. She was replaced by
Shannon Ropp midway through the second. Ropp made 23 saves in relief.
McGill won 32 of 56 face-offs, went 3-for-6 on the power play and was perfect on three penalty kills.
"I'm happy with our development," said Smith. "We still have lots of work to do but I'm certainly happy with where we are so far. I'm not sure we're playing our best hockey yet but we're certainly getting better in every game. To me, particularly in September and October, that's what you want to see as a coach."
The Martlets open their regular season at Concordia (0-1-0) on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.. The Stingers began league play this week with a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Sunday.
Dartmouth (1-1) opens their regular campaign at Harvard on Oct. 20.
