Alex Kiss-Rusk and
Marie-Love Michel each scored 13 points as visiting McGill tamed the Western Mustangs 70-49 in preaseason women's basketball, at Alumni Hall, Saturday.
The Martlets had a 19-8 lead after the first quarter, a 41-31 edge at halftime and took a 58-38 advantage into the final frame as they improved their record to 3-1 overall. McGill had a 46-24 rebounding advantage, a 13-10 margin in steals, a 1-0 edge in blocks and a 14-20 difference in turnovers.
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre from Beaconsfield, Que., shot 6-for-9 from the field and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. The fifth-year psychology senior grabbed three offensive and four defensive rebounds and had one block, two assists and a pair of steals.
Michel, a forward from Montreal, shot 4-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. She grabbed five rebounds and had two assists with a pair of steals. other McGill teammates in double digit scoring included
Gladys Hakizimana, a third-year guard from Montreal, who recorded a dozen points. She shot 4-for-5 from the floor, including 1-for-2 from three-point range, was 3-for-4 on free throws, corralled three rebounds and stole two balls. Freshman
Charlotte Clayton of Newmarket, Ont., rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. She added six rebounds and one steal.
Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., contributed nine points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist. Sophomore forward
Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila of Montreal added five points andled all players in rebounds with 10, including six in the defensive zone. She also chipped in one assist and a steal.
Mackenzie Pulkicz led the Mustangs with 10 points and three rebounds.
The Martlets shot 47.4 per cent from the field (27/57), 22.2 per cent from the three-point range (4/18) and 12-for-18 from the stripe (66.7). Western shot 35.2 per cent (19/54) from the floor, 5-for-15 from beyond the arc and was 6-for-13 (46.2 per cent) on free throws.
McGill continues their road trip to southern Ontario with a Saturday matinee against McMaster in Hamilton before returning home for the Redbird Classic, from Oct. 20-22 at Love Competition Hall. The Martlets' first game of the tournament will be against St. FX at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.
Western (0-1) will travel to Toronto to take part in Ryerson's Darcel Wright Memorial Classic tournament that same weekend.
