Crimson trims Martlets' sails in preseaon hockey

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Becca Gilmore scored twice in the first 87 seconds of play, including the game winner, and added an assist as the Harvard Crimson defeated McGill 6-1 in a cross-border women's hockey exhibition at Bright-Landry Centre on Friday.

Harvard outshot McGill 38-28 and improved their lifetime record to 11-1-1 against the Martlets, having suffered their only setback last year with a 3-0 shutout.

The Martlets were 0-for-7 on the power play and managed 10 shots on goal with the extra attacker. Harvard was 2-for-5 with 12 shots.

Gilmore opened the scoring 71 seconds into the game and doubled the advantage just 16 seconds later. She then assisted on Brooke Jovanovich's goal at 7:58 to make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

Jade Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-8 sophomore forward from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., tallied the only goal of the second period, connecting on a one-timer from the left circle  with 53 seconds left in the frame, assisted by Olivia Atkinson of Oakville, Ont. It was Downie-Landry's team-leading eighth marker in eight preseason contests.

Midway through the third, with McGill in the box for tripping, Haley Mullins put the game out of reach, increasing the Crimson lead to 4-1 with a power-play marker at 8:46. Teammate Val Turgeon closed out the scoring with a pair of goals, at 13:53 on the power play and at 19:56.

Downie-Landry was the toughest player in the face-off circle and led both teams with a 10-5 record on 15 draws. Martlets team captain Alison MacKenzie, a defenceman from Osgoode, Ont., blocked four shots in the contest.

McGill netminder Tricia Deguire, a 20-year-old sophomore from Sherbrooke, Que., made 32 saves in a losing effort.

Beth Larcom started in goal for Harvard and earned the win with 14 saves through 30 minutes and 29 seconds. Becky Dutton replaced her midway through the second and allowed one goal on 14 shots in 29:28.

The Crimson outshot the Martlets 38-28, including a 17-6 advantage in the second frame. Both the power play and penalty kill units saw ample action tonight, Harvard going two for five on the man advantage and shutting the door on all seven of McGill's power play opportunities.

McGill continues its Ivy League NCAA tour with a game against Yale at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 14). The Crimson open their regular season against Dartmouth on Oct. 20.
