COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Five hits from
Emerson Dohm produced five RBIs and paved the way to a 15-5 victory for McGill over Ottawa at Gary Carter Field, Sunday, to complete a doubleheader sweep for the Redmen and extend their win streak to 25 games in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first inning but McGill moved into a 5-3 lead after two and 7-4 after four. The Gee-Gees pushed across one more in the fifth but McGill responded with eight runs in the sixth inning and the "mercy rule" was deployed for the second straight game.
Hitting from the three-spot in the batting order, Dohm, a 5-foot-11, 177-pound first baseman from West Vancouver, B.C., went 5-for-5 and scored twice. The 21-year-old history junior singled in the first inning, smacked three consecutive doubles in the second, fourth and sixth, then singled again in the sixth.
McGill, which had a 16-3 advantage in hits, also had two apiece from
Nick Linton,
Benji Kaiserman,
Camden Lawhead and
Titouan Delorme, each of who had two RBIs, except for Linton. Kaiserman, a psychology junior from Los Angeles, went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and also crossed the plate four times.
Shane Curran, a junior from Vancouver, B.C., started on the mound for the Redmen but struggled and lasted only two innings. He allowed three runs (one earned) on one hit but walked four, hit two batters and threw two wild pitches en route to striking out four.
Curran was relieved by
Bobby Finnie, a management freshman from The Woodlands in Texas, who was credited with the win. He allowed two hits and two runs over three innings, striking out three and walking none. Sophomore
Sam Greene, who hails from Philadelphia, threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen, walked two and struck out one. Finniie was also charged with two wild pitches and Green had one.
McGill, which improved to 15-0, will try to run the table and produce their first-ever perfect regular season when they host Concordia in the season finale on Monday (Oct. 2). The game, slated for a 7:30 p.m. start at Gary Carter Field (located behind the Cavendish Mall), is a make-up affair for the one that was rained out last week.
Ottawa finished last in the five-team CCBA Northern Conference with a 2-14 record. The CCBA playoffs are slated to begin next weekend.
