MONTREAL --
Adryanna Dorismond-Rodrigue of Longueuil, Que., scored 18.5 points as the fifth-ranked Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 3-1 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Centre CEPSUM on Friday. The set scores were 16-25, 8-25, 28-26 and 21-25.
"The first two sets we were not even close to being competitive," admitted McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "Montreal played really, really well -- probably the best I've ever seen them play. They were just on top of us.
"Slowly we started to play a different style, trying to do something to permit us to at least compete with them," she explained of her squad's mid-match resurgence. "We played better, gained confidence and were able to win the third set. The fourth set was really tight as well until the end. We couldn't close the game out, but that set overall was a really good one."
Dorismond-Rodrigue earned her points on the strength of 15 kills, an ace, one stuff block and three assisted blocks. Teammate
Marie-Alex Bélanger followed with 14.5 points and led the game with 17 digs.
Erika Cournoyer of Longueuil, Que., and
Elisabeth Perrault of Laval, Que., led the Martlets with 10 points apiece on identical statistics, with each collecting seven kills, one ace, a stuff block and two assisted blocks, along with a pair of assists and three digs.
Freshman
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., tallied 7.5 points with six kills, an ace and a block. She also chipped in four digs and a pair of assists.
Emilie Matte de Grasse,
Myriam Robitaille and
Thara Dawoodjee each scored seven points. Matte de Grasse, a Montrealer, had five kills, an ace, two stuff blocks, three digs and a trio of assists. Robitaille, from Terrebonne, Que., had five kills and three blocks, along with a pair of digs. Dawoodjee, a setter from Ottawa, had three kills, a game-leading four aces, and was credited with 21 assists.
"After we made the adjustments, we served really well because we unbalanced their serve-receive game a lot," said Beliveau. "We managed to play so that they couldn't hit as hard anymore."
McGill had an 8-7 edge in service aces, while the Carabins held a 46-34 margin in kills and a massive 63-30 advantage in digs.
The Martlets, who dropped to 6-8, now find themselves in a three-way tie for third-place with Sherbrooke and Ottawa. One victory now separates the bottom four teams. in the six-team RSEQ conference. McGill returns home to host last-place UQAM (5-9) at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 28) at Love Competition Hall. Montreal (11-3) visits Sherbrooke (6-8) on Jan. 29.
