MONTREAL --
Marie-Love Michel of Montreal tallied 20 points and was one of five players to reach double-digits as McGill walloped Concordia 90-62 in RSEQ women's basketball, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall. It was the most points scored by the Martlets in 86 regular season games since a 92-61 home-court victory over UQAM on Nov. 24, 2011.
The massive win came just two days after a 69-65 road loss to the Stingers on Thursday (Jan. 19).
"We're home, so we shot well in our gym," said McGill head coach
Ryan Thorne. "We spent time this weekend putting some shots up. Even in the loss we had at their place I thought the girls overall did some really good things. We saw some positive things there, we just shot better at home today. Once you start knocking out a few shots, everyone feels a little better and trusts their teammates more, so I think (the high-scoring victory) was the result of that."
Michel, a physical education junior, led five Martlets players who reached double-digits in scoring. She shot 7-for-12 from the field and was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. The 5-foot-9 winger also gathered six rebounds, had five assists, blocked two shots and stole one ball.
"We haven't had five scorers in double-figures in a while," said Thorne. "Marie-Love played an exceptional game coming off a pretty good one over at Concordia (on Thursday)."
Marika Guerin of Sorel, Que., scored 19 points and pulled down four rebounds. She shot 7-for-11, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, and chipped in five assists with a steal.
Gladys Hakizimana of Montreal also tallied 19 points. She shot 7-for-10 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, drained both her free-throws, and also added an assist.
Geraldine Cabillo-Abante of St. Laurent, Que., scored a dozen points and nabbed six rebounds. She shot 4-for-5 from the field, including a 2-for-2 effort on three-pointers and sank both chances from the stripe.
Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., added 10 points and seven rebounds, including six in the defensive zone. She shot 4-for-5 from the field, went 2-for-2 from the line and added two assists, a pair of blocks and a steal.
"With the departure of some of our graduating players and then the change with the loss of (recently-injured)
Jennifer Silver, it's just getting everyone understanding what their roles are as they move over to a different position," offered Thorne. "I think that's why you're seeing some of the inconsistency (where we split back-to-back games). Once we start to figure some things out we can still be tough to deal with."
Silver, a senior power forward, has missed five games since injuring a hand against Laval on Jan. 4.
Richelle Gregoire was Concordia's top scorer with 16 points, followed by
Marilyse Roy-Viau with 15, including a perfect 11-for-11 free-throw effort.
McGill maintained a 37-15 margin in rebounds and a 5-0 difference in blocked shots. The Stingers had a 9-4 difference in steals and an 18-7 advantage in turnovers. The Martlets shot a very impressive 58.9 per cent from the field (33/56), including 57.1 from beyond the arc (12/21), and were 12-for-14 from the stripe. Concordia shot just 28.6 per cent from the field (20/70), including a 4-for-17 record from downtown (23.5 per cent), and were 18-for-20 on free throws.
The Stingers (3-5) host Bishop's (1-6) on Jan. 26. McGill, which improved to 4-6 with six games remaining, has 12 days off before returning to the court against the last-place Gaiters on Feb. 2. Bishop's lone victory was against McGill, a 62-40 shocker against the visiting Martlets on Nov. 26.
