Trio delivers double-double record as Redmen rally to complete McGill sweep over Stingers

MONTREAL – Three McGill players shared in a school record with each posting a "double-double" as the Redmen battled back from a seven-point deficit in the second half to outlast Concordia 63-51 in men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday. The victory, combined with the Martlets 90-62 win in the opener, gave McGill a doubleheader sweep over the Stingers, two days after being swept at the Loyola campus.

The Redmen out-rebounded Concordia by an astonishing 42-24 margin, which played a key role in avenging a 66-56 loss to the Stingers on Thursday.

In an ugly back-and-forth affair that featured six lead changes, the Redmen led 18-9 after the opening frame and 25-24 at halftime. Concordia came out of the break strong and were up 34-27 at the 5:05 mark before McGill went on an 11-2 run to take a 38-36 lead into the final stanza. The Redmen saved their best for last, outscoring the Stingers 25-15 in the fourth to seal the victory.

Dele Ogundokun, a 6-foot-2, 222-pound guard, had a reverse double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two steals in a game-high 34 minutes.

"Dele did a great job in the fourth quarter," said McGill bench boss David DeAveiro. "Concordia made a huge effort to deny him the ball and limit his touches early on but he got the job done when it mattered most."

Teammates Michael Peterkin and Francois Bourque each scored a game-high 13 points. Peterkin, a Toronto, Ont. native, added 10 rebounds and was an efficient 5-for-10 from the field. He also shot 3-for-6 from the foul-line and had a block as well as a steal. Bourque, a 6-foot-6 forward from Terrebonne, Que., also snagged 11 rebounds.

"It was the first time that I can recall having three players on the same team registering a double-double in any game that I've coached," noted DeAveiro, who improved to 343-220 lifetime in 16 years behind the bench, including a 133-94 mark in seven seasons at McGill.

Point-guard Jenning Leung, a 6-foot-1 senior from Laguna in The Philippines, also impressed, contributing 11 points and four steals. He shot 4-for-9 from the floor, which included a 3-for-6 performance from downtown.

The Redmen shot 38.2 per cent from the floor (21/55), 26.1 from the arc (6/23) and 71.4 from the line (15/21). Concordia replied on 29.6, 13.6 and 80.0, respectively.

"When teams are defending like that it's always going to be an ugly game," added DeAveiro, whose troops to 19 of the 42 fouls called. Nine players were in foul trouble but only Concordia's Ricardo Monge fouled out. "It was very physical, a lot of touching and grabbing so it was hard to score. You have to give credit to Concordia's defence but at the same time I was proud of our defensive effort as well."

Two Stingers reached double digit scoring, with Nicholas Noble and Michael Fosu dropping 11 and 10 points, respectively.

McGill, which committed 24 turnovers compared to Concordia's 19, had a surprising 13-11 advantage in steals.

The result moved the division-leading Redmen to 7-3. four points ahead of second-place UQAM (5-5) and six ahead of both Concordia (4-4) and Laval (4-4) with six games remaining in the RSEQ regular season schedule. McGill has won two of three meetings from the Stingers with one confrontation remaining on Feb. 16.

Concordia will battle Bishop's (2-5) next, at home on Jan. 26. The Redmen now enter a bye week and return to action on Feb. 2 when they travel to Lennoxville to confront the Gaiters.
