Sherbrooke sweeps lacklustre ladies from McGill in key collegiate volleyball confrontation

SHERBROOKE, Que. -- Sarah-Jeanne Meunier-Bédard of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., scored 12.5 points as Sherbrooke swept McGill 25-15, 25-22, and 25-16 to open the second semester of RSEQ women's volleyball at Pavillon Univestrie on Friday.

The win gave the third-place Vert et Or a four-point advantage over fifth-place McGill in the league standings and a 2-1 edge in the season series with one more meeting to come.

Meunier-Bédard, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, earned her points on the strength of nine kills, three service aces, and an assisted block.

McGill had a 62-59 margin in digs, while Sherbrooke held a 31-30 advantage in kills, an 8-2 difference in service aces and a 3-2 edge in blocks.

"Sherbrooke played well and we didn't," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau."We didn't pass well,  missed a lot of serves and didn't get many aces. It was a very disappointing performance, especially after doing so well at the RMC tournament last week. We can play much better and have to learn to play under pressure. When our team plays with confidence, nobody can stop us. Most of the time when we lose its a case of us beating ourselves."

The Martlets were missing junior Myriam Robitaille and Rowan Fletcher, a promising rookie. Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker, had her wisdom teeth pulled last Monday and was not able to suit up. Fletcher, a right-side hitter who also stands six feet tall, is recovering from a shoulder injury.

Elisabeth Perrault, an accounting freshman from Laval, Que., led the Martlets with 9.5 points. The 5-foot-10 middle blocker had eight kills, one ace, one block and a pair of digs. Teammate Claire Vercheval, a 6-foot-2 power hitter from Ste. Julie, Que., followed with eight points, on seven kills and two blocks and recorded five digs. Marie-Eve Dorion, a physical education senior from St. Hubert, Que., was credited with a game-high 19 digs.

With nine games remaining before playoffs, the Martlets (4-7) return to the court on Jan. 20 when they host Laval (6-4) in the annual "Dig for the Cure" fundraiser match in support of breast cancer at Love Competition Hall at 7 p.m. Sherbrooke (6-5) visits UQAM (3-7) on Jan. 21.
