Citadins arrest Martlets as McGill hoopsters stumble for second consecutive contest

MONTREAL -- Jessica Lubin tallied 20 points as UQAM defeated visiting McGill 55-47 in RSEQ women's basketball at the Centre Sportif, Friday.

The teams were tied 9-9 after the first quarter but UQAM took a 29-20 lead into halftime and stretched it to 42-32 after three. A 15-13 scoring edge in the final frame proved too little, too late for the Martlets, who now own a 36-23 record in 59 lifetime meetings with the Citadins.

Lubin, a 6-foot-2 centre, shot 8-for-16 from the field and 4-for-6 on free throws. She pulled down nine rebounds and had two assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals. Teammate Quételine Célestin followed with 14 points and five rebounds.

McGill was led by Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., who scored 11 points. The 5-foot-10 guard shot 3-for-8 from the field, including 2-for-3 from the three-point range, and 3-for-6 from the charity stripe. She also collected five rebounds, a pair of steals and a blocked shot. Alex Kiss-Rusk, a senior from Beaconsfield, Que., nabbed a game-high dozen rebounds and shot 3-for-9 from the floor to earn six points. The 6-foot-4 centre was also credited with a game-leading four assists, along with two blocks and a steal. Gladys Hakizimana, a sophomore from Montreal, recorded eight points and three rebounds. She shot 4-for-9 from the field and added one block and a steal in 24 minutes of court time.

The Citadins had a 37-36 edge in rebounds and an 11-10 margin in steals. The Martlets held a 5-2 advantage in blocks and a 20-21 difference in turnovers.

McGill shot 32.7 per cent from the field (18/55), 31.6  from beyond the arc (6/19) and succeeded on just five of 11 attempts from the stripe (45.5 per cent). UQAM shot 40.4 per cent from the field (21/52), including a perfect 4-for-4 performance from downtown, and went 9-for-15 on free throws.

The teams will tip off again on Saturday (Jan. 14) at 4 p.m. in the first game of a matinee doubleheader at Love Competition Hall. UQAM (5-2) sits second in the league six points ahead of the third-place Martlets (2-5).
