PETERBOROUGH, Ont -- Jeff Fernandes of Whitby, Ont., scored the game-winner with 45 seconds remaining as the undefeated Trent Excalibur rallied for a 10-9 come-from-behind win over McGill on Saturday, in a Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association thriller at Justin Chiu Stadium.

The victory, Trent's first over the Redmen since a 9-7 win on Oct. 17, 2010, snapped a 10-game losing streak to McGill. More importantly, it halted McGill's 17-game win streak in league and playoffs, posted by the defending national champs dating back to the start of last season, when they went 15-0. McGill is now 11-6 lifetime against Trent since the Excalibur joined the CUFLA in 2008.

"We played a good game, not a great game, against a very good team," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "We just didn't quite deliver today but we'll get a chance (at redemption) when we meet them again on the last day of the season on our turf."

McGill led 3-1 after the opening quarter, 5-4 at halftime and 8-6 heading into the final stanza, where Trent out scored the Redmen 4-1.

Danny Michel and Nick Karam both had hat-tricks for the winning side. Rounding out the scoring for the Excalibur was Eddy Garrett, Travis Ferguson and Justin Demarchi.

Spencer Bromley was McGill's top gun with four goals and one assist in losing cause. Rookie Liam MacDonald added a pair, with singles going to Emile Sassone-Lawless, Jay Jiranek and Goose Bolton, who tried to halt the fourth quarter slide when he tied the score at 9-9 with 3:37 remaining.

Trent goaltender Kyle Holton saved 11 of 20 shots for the win, while McGill's William Waesche turned aside 13 of 23 shots and took the loss.

Trent, which improved to 3-0, moved two points ahead of McGill (2-1) in the CULA East Division standings. The two teams are slated to tango once more on Oct. 23 at Forbed Field on the McGill campus.

The Redmen had mechanical problems with their bus after the Trent game which resulted in a very late arrival in Oshawa -- where they are slated to play The Hill Academy, arguably one of the toughest Canadian opponents they have ever faced -- in an exhibition game Sunday (Sept. 18) at 1 p.m.
