NCAA's Hatters master McGill in 116th annual men's hoops opener

MONTREAL -- Divine Myles scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Stetson University Hatters in an 80-65 win over McGill in the men's basketball preseason opener at Love Competition Hall, Sunday. Stetson is an NCAA Div. 1 team based in DeLand, Fla., and play in in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

It was the 116th season opener for the Redmen and the result dropped McGill's record to 3-15 in their last 18 confrontations against NCAA Div. 1 teams, dating back to 2011.

The Hatters impoved to 2-1 on their four-game Canadian tour, which opened with a 72-67 win at UQAM on Aug. 5, followed by an 85-76 loss at Carleton on Aug. 6.

Leo Goodman scored 11 and Brian Pegg chipped in with 10 points for Stetson. For the third straight game all 11 players on the roster saw action, and each player scored at least two points.

McGill was led by Avery Cadogan's 17 points. The 6-foot-3 junior guard from Winnipeg, Man., shot 5-for-6 from the floor, including a 4-for-5 effort from three-point range. He was perfect on all three attempts from the foul-line, pulled down three rebounds and was credited with one blocked shot in 30 minutes of court time.

Teammate Regis Ivaniukas, a senior guard from Oakville, Ont., added 10 points while playing a team-high 33 minutes. He shot 4-for-7 from the floor including a 2-for-5 effort from beyond the arc.

Stetson led 20-19 after the opening quarter and 40-35 at halftime but the Redmen rallied and led 49-47 with 4:06 left in the third quarter. The Hatters, however, regrouped and finished the period with 10-2 run for a 57-51 lead entering the fourth.

The Hatters pulled away over the final 10 minutes. Myles, who scored 11 points in the second half, had seven in the final period when Stetson outscored McGill, 23-14.

"It was a great way for us to get all 15 players into the game and evaluate our guys against a very good Stetson team," said McGill head coach David DeAveiro."After only two days of practice, our goal is to get better every game and continue to provide these opportunities for our players."

The Redmen held a 19-15 margin in rebounding and a 2-1 edge in blocks but committed 16 turnovers to Stetson's eight.

McGill shot 45.7 per cent from the field (21/46), 35.3 from beyond the arc (12/34) and 84.6 from the free-throw line (11/13). The Hatters shot 50.9, 25.7 and 86.7, respectively.

Stetson's ability to close out the Redmen on their home court didn't go unnoticed by head coach Corey Williams.

"I think what I'm learning about these guys is that we have some resolve and they know how to finish the game now," Williams said. "They don't have to look to me and wait for me to call out a play. They can go get a basket on their own. They know what to do."

Angel Rivera scored nine points for Stetson. B.J. Glasford and Grant Lozoya scored six apiece. Derick Newton (5), Clay Verk (5), Larry Dennis (5), Luke Doyle (3) and Kevin Ndahiro (2) also contributed.

The Hatters close their tour on Monday when they face Concordia at 7 p.m. McGill will host Wichita State on Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the back end of a doubleheader. In the early game, the McGill Martlets will open their preseason schedule when they host Seton Hall at 7 p.m.
