MONTREAL – Team captain
Melodie Daoust scored the game-winner and
Gabrielle Davidson became the sixth player in team history to reach the 200-point plateau as No.3-ranked McGill blanked the Carleton Ravens 2-0 in women's university hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.
It was McGill's fourth victory in five contests against Carleton this season – the only setback was a 1-0 decision on Nov. 13 -- and improved their lifetime record to 86-2-1 in 89 meetings overall with the Ravens.
The Martlets had a lopsided 46-17 margin in shots as sophomore goaltender
Kayla Loberg of Toronto earned her second shutout and improved her record to 2-1. Carleton's
Katelyn Steele, a sophomore from Markham, Ont., turned away 44 of 45 shots to keep her team in the game until the final minutes. It was all in vain, as her record dropped to 3-13.
Daoust, a native of Valleyfield, Que., was penalized just 81 seconds into the game but immediately redeemed herself. Seconds after exiting the penalty box, she drew a tripping penalty from Carleton defender
Valerie Bouillon. The physical education senior didn't waste any time on the ensuing power-play. She skated past two defenders, froze the Carleton netminder on a fake pass, then fired a rocket over the goalie's head for her league-leading 15
th goal at 4:10. She also assisted on Davidson's empty-net insurance marker at 18:36 of the final frame.
With the two points, Daoust moved back into first place in the RSEQ scoring race with 29 points in 17 games and is ranked second among all CIS points leaders. She also improved her career record to 88-111-199 in 99 contests overall with McGill.
Davidson, a management senior from Pointe Claire, Que., collected her milestone point by assisting on Daoust's decisive goal. After adding an empty-netter, she now owns a 118-83-201 record in 152 career contests.
"The puck hasn't gone in for her at times this season but it's starting to do so now, which is nice to see," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith of his 2014-15 team MVP who struggled to score through the early part of the season. "She's worked hard and she's been a really good player for us."
Stefanie Pohlod and
Brittney Fouracres, both fifth-year chemical engineering students from Calgary, also made it on the scoresheet. Pohlod assisted on the opening goal, while Fouracres, a defender, merited a helper on the final tally.
"We had a good effort today, had a lot of attempted shots on goal and played well in their end," offered Smith. "There were times when I thought we could've had a bit more traffic in front of Steele but overall I liked our effort. We had everybody going, and that's what it takes."
McGill was 1-for-4 with the extra attacker and returned to form on the penalty kill, shutting down all of Carleton's four opportunities.
With just three games remaining, the Martlets improved to 10-5-2 and hung on to second place in the RSEQ standings, one point ahead of Ottawa (10-6-1), a team that McGill will likely meet in the semifinals. Montreal (14-3-1) has clinched the top spot in the conference and last-place Carleton (3-15-0) have been eliminated from playoff contention after two losses this weekend. They host Concordia on Sunday, Feb. 14. McGill will face-off against the fourth-place Stingers (6-8-2) on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Ed Meagher Arena.
