Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Kirsten Whelan

Davidson dynamite, Daoust delivers memorable milestones as hockey Martlets rally to upend Stingers

MONTREAL -- Gabrielle Davidson scored twice and team captain Melodie Daoust reached a pair of memorable milestones as third-ranked McGill rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Concordia Stingers 3-2 in RSEQ women's hockey at Ed Meagher Arena on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Martlets' eighth consecutive win over their cross-town rivals and improved their lifetime record to 74-38-3 in 115 meetings overall since the CIS sanctioned women's hockey in 1997. Concordia came out strong, holding a 2-0 lead midway through the contest before McGill responded with three unanswered goals.

Davidson, a management senior from Pointe-Claire, Que., netted the equalizer with rocket-like shot at 18:45 in the second period and buried the game-winner under the crossbar at 7:21 of the third.

"She was one of our players who really picked it up and put the team on her back," said head coach Peter Smith of his 2014-15 team MVP. "In the second and third periods, I thought she was really good. Those two goals were pro shots that she had today; they were unbelievable."

Daoust, a senior from Valleyfield, Que., hit two goal-posts and assisted on Davidson's deciding marker, becoming the seventh Martlet in team history to reach 200 points overall, but she accomplished the feat in just her 100th career game.

Olivia Atkinson of Toronto and Brittney Fouracres of Calgary assisted on Davidson's tying goal, while Alison MacKenzie, from Osgoode, Ont., earned a helper on the winning tally.

Erica Porter of Coaticook, Que., opened the scoring at 8:16 with a power-play marker for the Stingers, who led 1-0 on the scoreboard after one.

Ann-Julie Deschenes of Mont-Joli, Que., put Concordia head 2-0 on their only shot of the middle stanza before the Martlets came back in full force.

"It wasn't from a lack of effort," explained Smith of his team's slow start. "The flow just wasn't going our way. The girls got frustrated and it took them a little while to turn it around. One of the things I thought we could've been better at in the first period is puck support. That would've helped us to connect on more passes -- we had way too many turnovers in the first period and we didn't manage the puck as well as we could have."

Freshman science student Nicole Howlett of Delta, B.C., launched McGill's offence with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 at 17:10 of the middle period. It was her second career goal in 20 games overall but her first official marker in conference play.

"Nicole's big and might not be the speediest player but she's really smart," said Smith of his rookie's performance. "Plays well positionally and she's got a heck of a shot."

The shots on goal were 17-10 for the Martlets who dominated both of the final frames, limiting Concordia to just one shot in each.

Goaltender Taylor Hough of Toronto stopped eight of 10 pucks for the visitors and improved her record to 9-6. Her Stingers counterpart, Katherine Purchase of Halifax, N.S., turned away 14 of 17 as her record tumbled to 3-9.

McGill was 0-for-2 with the extra attacker and killed off three of four penalties.

The Martlets now sit second in the RSEQ conference with an 11-5-2 record. They hold a three-point edge over third-place Ottawa (6-8-1) and with just two games remaining, McGill can clinch second with a win over the visiting Gee-Gees on Sunday, in a "Bring your Bae" Valentine's Day affair at 3 p.m. at McConnell Arena. The game will serve as a playoff preview as the two squads are destined to meet in the post-season.

The Stingers are 6-8-2 and visit cellar-dwelling Carleton (3-15-0) on Sunday.
