Dele slices and dices as Redmen hoopsters avenge last year's playoff loss by eliminating Gaiters

MONTREAL -- Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., scored a game-high 21 points as No.8-ranked McGill overwhelmed the visiting Bishop's Gaiters 76-46 in RSEQ men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The result officially knocked Bishop's out of playoff contention and avenged McGill's heartbreaking 68-63 playoff loss in the conference final last spring. The Gaiters were thought to have regained some life last weekend with a surprise win over second-place Concordia but it was all for nothing. That result also managed to clinch a fourth consecutive regular season pennant for McGill who will now have the No.1  seed when they host the RSEQ Final Four tournament, March 10-12.

Ogundokun, a 6-foot-2 guard, finally found his shooting touch, going 8 of 13 from the floor, including a 4-for-6 performance from downtown after struggling over his last handful of games.

"It was really good to see Dele make some shots," said McGill bench boss David DeAveiro. "He has put a lot of time in the gym shooting the ball, so this is a nice reward for him."

The economics and accounting junior also added six rebounds, two assists, a pair of steals and one block. "He is our glue guy," added DeAveiro. "He does a whole bunch of little things for us that make a huge difference.

McGill, which held a 24-16 advantage in turnovers that resulted in a 21-14 margin in points off miscues, came out of the gate slow and trailed 17-15 after the opening quarter. They then cranked up the energy in the second and outscored Bishop's 20-5 to take a 35-22 lead into the break. The second half was much of the same as McGill never looked back outscoring the Gaiters 22-15 in the third and 19-9 in the fourth.

Two other Redmen reached double figures in scoring. Point guard Jenning Leung, who returned from injury, had 15 points in 25 minutes of court-time, while graduate student Tychon Carter-Newman dropped 10. Leung was 6-for-10 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and went 1-for-3 from the foul-line. Carter-Newman was just as efficient, shooting five of six from the floor while dishing out five assists and collecting four rebounds.

The Gaiters only had two players in double digits with Duncan Lambert and Abdul Kamane scoring 11 apiece.

McGill shot 45.6 per cent from the field (31/68), went 7-for-17 from three-point range and sank 7 of 13 from the line (53.8%). Bishop's shot an ugly 20.3 per cent from the floor (13/64) and went only 1-for-17 from beyond the arc. They drained 19 of 27 attempts from the line. The Redmen had a 43-33 edge in rebounds, including 18 under the offensive boards. McGill continues to lead the nation in offensive rebounds with an average of 15.7 per game.

The Redmen will close out their season schedule against cross-town foe UQAM on Saturday, March 5, where they will pay tribute to their graduating seniors. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
