MONTREAL -- Conference rookie of the year
Sarah-Jeanne Meunier-Bédard tallied a game-high 19 points as the 10th-ranked Sherbrooke Vert & Or upset No.9 McGill 25-19, 25-18 and 25-23 to open the RSEQ women's volleyball semifnals before a subdued crowd at Love Competition Hall, Friday.
LINK TO VIDEO HIGHLIGHTSMcGill now faces a must-win road affair in Game 2 of the best-of-three series, set for Saturday at 6 p.m. in Sherbrooke. If a rubber match is needed, it is slated back at the McGill Sports Centre on Sunday at 2 p.m.
In a contest that took just 77 minutes to play, the Vert & Or posted a 22.4 per cent success rate in hitting proficiency, compared to a subpar 2.0 by the Martlets. Sherbrooke had a 30-26 edge in kills, a 12-5 advantage in service aces and a stunning 14-2 margin in blocked shots. One of the few statistical advantages for McGill was in digs, where they out-performed Sherbrooke 62-43.
Myriam Robitaille and
Marie-Eve Dorion paced a lethargic Martlets offence with only eight points apiece. Robitaille had five kills and a pair of aces to go along with seven digs and two assisted blocks. Dorion combined a half-dozen kills with an ace and 10 digs.
Emilie Matte de Grasse shared the team lead in kills with six. She added an ace and 10 digs.
Catherine Amyot contributed five kills, an ace and six digs.
In seven meetings overall thi season, the Martlets hold a 4-3 edge when confronting Sherbroke, which knocked McGill out of a playoff berth last year.
