BOISBRIAND, Que. (U Sports) - Sam Steel of Sherwood Park, Alta., tallied twice as the Canadian national junior prospects defeated the U Sports All-Stars 5-3 at the Centre d'Excellence Sports Rousseau, Monday.

The juniors, which led 2-0 after one, jumped into a 4-0 lead before the second period was five minutes old but watched in horror as the university all-stars mounted a spirited comeback with three goals in two minutes and 39 seconds, narrowing the gap to 4-3 after two. 

Steel, a first-round draft-pick of the Anaheim Ducks, gave the prospects a 3-0 lead early in the second period and completed the scoring with a power-play marker at 11:31 of the final stanza to fizzle out the U Sports comeback attempt. 

Arizona draftee Dylan Strome of Mississauga, Ont., and Tampa pick Taylor Raddysh of Caledon, Ont., put the prospects up 2-0 on goals at 5:49 (power-play) and 13:48, respectively. 

But U Sports, formerly known as CIS, turned what threatened to be a blow-out into a hard-fought battle. 

UNB's Philippe Maillet of Terrebonne, Que., reduced the deficit to 4-1 at 13:23 of the second, then set up Carleton forward Brett Welychka of London, Ont., on a power-play just 58 seconds later. And 31 seconds after that, the collegians struck again when McGill rearguard Nathan Chiarlitti of Maple, Ont., connected.

"We had a tough time in the first period turning pucks over and it continued on for the first 10 minutes of the second," said U Sports head coach Brett Gibson, who serves as bench boss at Queen's. "But once we started taking care of the puck, we started to create a lot of opportunities. We had four 2-on-1 chances in that period, plus a breakaway. If we score on some of those, it might've been a different game. We showed a lot of character to come back against that team which has a bunch of first-round picks."

The prospects camp roster has 31 players that have been drafted by NHL teams, including 14 first-rounders. The U Sports lineup featured 22 of 23 players with a background in major junior hockey but only two of them drafted – Acadia's Geoff Schemitsch (Tampa Bay, 2010) and Saskatchewan's Kendall McFaull (Atlanta, 2010). 

The juniors, which had a 29-23 edge in shots, went 2-for-5 on the power-play, while the students went 1-for-4.

Philadelphia Flyers pick Carter Hart collected the win between the pipes. He saved all 10 shots faced before giving way to Michael McNiven midway through the second. McNiven kicked aside 10 of 13 shots.

As is usually the case, Hockey Canada puts one of their goaltenders in the U Sports net and Connor Ingram drew the short straw. A third-round selection by Tampa, he turned aside 24 of 29 shots in a losing cause.

"The first 10 minutes we kind of just dipped our toes in and weren't really sure what to expect," said Calgary's Elgin Pearce, a two-time winner of the national R.W. Pugh Award as most sportsmanlike player, who was called for three minor penalties and added two assists in the contest.

"But once we got our legs under us, we knew we could skate with them and we started to turn the game around." 

The teams will meet again on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m.

GAME NOTES: The juniors lead the all-time series with 14 victories in 20 confrontations against various university configurations since 2003. Hockey Canada uses these preliminary games as preparation before their final cuts prior to the IIHF world junior championship.

Hockey de U Sports: Les espoirs de l'équipe nationale junior remportent la première manche

BOISBRIAND, QUE. –Sam Steel de Sherwood Park, Alb., a inscrit deux buts pour permettre aux espoirs de l'équipe nationale junior du Canada de l'emporter 5-3 sur les étoiles du hockey masculin de U Sports ce lundi soir au Centre d'Excellence Sports Rousseau.

La formation junior, qui menait 2-0 après la première période, a doublé son avance à 4-0 après quatre minutes de jeu au deuxième vingt, mais a vu les étoiles de U Sports effectué une remontée spectaculaire en inscrivant trois buts en deux minutes, 39 secondes, pour réduire l'écart à 4-3 après 40 minutes de jeu. 

Steel, un choix de première ronde des Ducks d'Anaheim, a donné une avance de 3-0 aux espoirs de l'équipe nationale en début de deuxième période, puis a complété le pointage en marquant l'unique but du troisième engagement à 11:31 suite à un avantage numérique pour stopper le retour des étoiles de U Sports. 

Repêché respectivement par l'Arizona et Tampa-Bay, Dylan Strome de Mississauga, Ont. et Taylor Raddysh de Caledon, Ont., ont inscrits les premiers buts du match pour les espoirs de l'équipe nationale junior à 5:49 (avantage numérique) et à 13:48. 

Mais U Sports, connu anciennement sous le nom de SIC, a transformé ce qui semblait être une domination par un duel des plus intéressant. 

Le porte-couleur de UNB Philippe Maillet de Terrebonne, Qué., a réduit l'écart à 4-1 à 13:23 de la deuxième période, puis a aidé l'attaquant de Carleton Brett Welychka (London, Ont.) à marquer 58 secondes plus tard en avantage numérique. Et 31 secondes plus tard, les universitaires ont frappé à nouveau lorsque le défenseur de McGill Nathan Chiarlitti (Maple, Ont.) a marqué le troisième filet des représentants de U Sports. 

« Nous avons eu des moments difficiles en première période avec des revirements de rondelles et ça continué lors des 10 premières minutes du second engagement, a relaté l'entraîneur chef de U Sports Brett Gibson, qui occupe le poste de pilote à Queen's. Mais une fois que nous avons commencé à prendre soin de la rondelle, nous avons créer beaucoup d'opportunités. On a eu quatre chances de deux contre un en deuxième, plus une échappée. Si nous marquons sur certains de ces jeux, ça aurait pu être un scénario différent. Nous avons montré beaucoup de caractère pour revenir de l'arrière face à une équipe qui possède plusieurs choix de premières rondes. » 

L'alignement du camp des espoirs de l'équipe nationale junior du Canada bénéficie de 31 joueurs qui ont été réclamé par une formation de la Ligue nationale de hockey, incluant 14 choix de première ronde. Pour sa part, l'alignement de U Sports comptent 22 joueurs sur 23 à avoir évolué au niveau junior majeur, dont deux qui ont été sélectionné par des équipes de la LNH – Geoff Schemitsch d'Acadia (Tampa Bay, 2010) et Kendall McFaull de la Saskatchewan (Atlanta, 2010).

Les espoirs, qui ont tiré à 29 reprises contre 23 pour les étoiles de U Sports, ont réussi deux buts en cinq occasions en avantage numérique. Les unités spéciales de U Sports ont marqué à une reprise en quatre occasions en avantage numérique. 

Le choix des Flyers de Philadelphie Carter Hart a été crédité de la victoire pour les espoirs. Il a stoppé les 10 tirs à lui faire face, avant de céder sa place à Michael McNiven à mi-parcours de la seconde période. McNiven a arrêté 10 lancers sur 13 tirs. 

Comme c'est habituellement le cas, Hockey Canada a placé un de ses gardiens de but dans le filet des représentants de U Sports. Sélectionné en troisième ronde par Tampa-Bay, Connor Ingram a été crédité du revers, lui qui a stoppé 24 des 29 tirs lui faisant face 

Les deux équipes se feront face à nouveau ce mardi après-midi à 13h.

NOTES : Les espoirs mènent la série avec 12 victoires en 17 affrontements contre diverses formations universitaires depuis 2003. Hockey Canada utilise ces matchs préliminaires avant les coupes finales en vue du Championnat mondial junior de l'IIHF.
