MONTREAL --
Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que.,scored a game-high 19 points as McGill upset division-leading Sherbrooke 3-2 in RSEQ women's volleyball action at Love Competition Hall, Friday. The set scores were 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-13 in a contest that took two hours and eight minutes to play.
The Martlets had a 50-45 edge in kills but Sherbrooke had the upper hand in digs (76-44) and service aces (16-12). Both sides had a dozen stuff blocks.
"We started really well today but we let them back in the game," said
Rachele Beliveau, in her 26th season as head coach at McGill. "We played with more confidence but Sherbrooke is a good defensive team and can dig and pass well. We became impatient and didn't work as well together as we needed to. We have to focus on that in order to play as a unit. Once we have developed enough experience and more maturity, we will be a strong group."
Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker, collected 16 kills with a pair of aces and one block. The French literature junior was one of four Martlets to reach double digits in scoring.
Freshman starter
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., contributed 14 points, on the strength of a dozen kills. Teammates
Emilie Matte de Grasse of Montreal and
Erika Cournoyer of Longueuil, Que., added 12.5 points apiece.
Rowan Fletcher, another rookie starter, added nine points. Setter
Thara Dawoodjee, a junior from Ottawa, registered a game-high 36 assists.
Marjolaine Ste-Marie, a senior libero from St. Lambert, Que., had a dozen digs and controlled the back line, leading the team with a 2.06 passing ratio out of 3.0.
Leading the Vert & Or was
Sarah-Jeanne Meunier-Bedard with 17.5 points, plus
Catherine Deslauriers (16.5) and
Flavie Beaudin-Fol (14.5).
McGill, which evened their record at 2-2, plays at UQAM (1-3) on Saturday at 7 p.m., while Sherbrooke (3-2) hosts Laval (2-1) on Sunday.

Catherine Amyot, a two-time all-star power-hitter from Montreal, was honoured in a post-game ceremony as a graduating senior. Unsure if she would be graduating with team captain
Yasmeen Dawoodjee in the final home game last spring when the seniors are typically feted, the materials engineering senior had to wait to complete an internship or "stage" this fall before receiving all of her credits. Over her four seasons, Amyot racked up 824 regular season points in 291 sets, registering 676 kills, 110 aces, 720 digs, 75 stuff blocks and 32 assists.
