Gaiters halt 67-game losing streak by stunning Martlets in college hoops

LENNOXVILLE, Que. -- Maude Archambault came off the bench to score 19 points as Bishop's halted a 67-game losing streak in regular season play with a stunning 62-40 victory over eighth-ranked McGill in RSEQ women's basketball at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday. It was the second game in three nights for McGill while the Gaiters hadn't played in eight days.

The losing skid included 18 in a row against the Martlets and was BU's first regular season conquest over any team since a 62-42 home-court victory over Laval on Feb. 24, 2012. The No.1 song on that date, according to Billboard's Hot 100 list of singles, was "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" by Kelly Clarkson.

The Gaiters, who are now coached by former McGill Redmen bench boss Craig Norman, had a 46-39 advantage in rebounds, a 15-16 edge in turnovers and stole seven balls to the Martlets' five. McGill held a 5-2 margin in blocked shots.

Bishop's, which never trailed, came out strong and took an early 25-12 lead after one, which increased to 40-20 by halftime. The Martlets narrowed the gap to 46-33 after the third quarter but the 13-point deficit was as close as McGill would get down the stretch.

Archambault, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard, shot 6-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, and sank three of four free-throw attempts. She also pulled down a half-dozen rebounds and recorded an assist, in 24 minutes of court time. The only other Gaiter in double figures was Mara Marchizotti, who had 14 points. Edith Noblecilla, the Gaiters' veteran point guard, was limited to six points and five rebounds, as she fouled out.

For McGill, senior Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., led the way with 18 points. The 6-foot-4 centre shot 7-for-17 from the field and was 4-for-9 on free-throws. She also grabbed nine rebounds, stole one ball and blocked a game-high four shots.

Jennifer Silver, a senior from Montreal, contributed seven points and corralled six rebounds. She shot 3-for-5 from the field and 1-for-4 from the stripe. Fellow Montrealer Marie-Love Michel, a junior, shot 3-for-9 overall to chip in six points and four rebounds, along with an assist.

The Martlets shot just 28.3 per cent from the field (15/53), went a paltry 0-for-8 on three-point attempts, and made just 45.5 per cent from the stripe (10/22).  Bishop's shot 37.9 from the field (22/58), including an impressive 47.1 from beyond the arc (8/17) and went 10-for-16 on free-throws.

It was the final contest of the fall semester for both teams before the exam period and holiday break. McGill (1-3) resumes league play against Laval (4-0) on Jan. 4, while Bishop's (1-3) takes on the Rouge et Or the following week.
