Jolin gets rollin', rookie tallies 34 as Redmen hoopsters gobble Gaiters for Thanksgiving

LENNOXVILLE, Que. -- Freshman Kendrick Jolin of Pte. Claire, Que., nailed six treys and racked up 34 points as ninth-ranked McGill rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat Bishop's 81-73 in the final RSEQ men's basketball game of the semester, Saturday, at the Mitchell Gym.

It was a conference-high for the semester and the most points scored by a member of the Redmen in league play since Matthew Thornhill tallied 35 points in a 102-88 victory over Bishop's on Nov. 14, 2009. Jolin, a 6-foot-2, 192-pound point guard, shot 10-for-14 from the field, including 6-for-9 from the beyond the three-point arc and sank eight of 10 free-throw chances. The 19-year-old arts freshman also grabbed three rebounds and had a game-high five steals to go with a pair of assists.

In a game that featured 14 lead changes, the Gaiters were ahead 26-13 with just under a minute remaining in the opening quarter before McGill mounted a slow comeback. The Redmen narrowed the gap to 26-15 after the first quarter, then 43-41 by halftime and 62-61 after three, before a strong final frame where they outshone the Gaiters 20-11. A three-pointer by Owen Martel of Erin, Ont., put the Gaiters up 69-68 with 5:05 to play. But the Redmen went on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good as Bishop's was held to only one field-goal in the final five minutes.

McGill had a 31-30 edge in rebounds, a 2-0 margin in blocks, an 11-8 difference in steals and a favorable 19-14 advantage in turnovers.

Dele Ogundokun and Jenning Leung also reached double figures for the Redmen with 10 points apiece. Ogundokun, a management senior from Hamilton, Ont., shot 4-for-9 from the field, including 1-for-3 on treys, and netted one of four attempts from the charity stripe. He pulled down a pair of rebounds in addition to two steals, an assist and one blocked shot. Leung, a psychology senior from the Philippines, was also 4-for-9 from the floor, going 1-for-2 on both, three-pointers and free-throws. The 6-foot-1, 177-pound guard was also credited with a pair of assists and two steals.

Teammate Francois Bourque, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound accounting senior from Terrebonne, Que., contributed nine points and led the team with seven rebounds. He shot 2-for-7 from the field and 5-for-10 from the stripe.

David Belanger of Sherbrooke, Que., was the Gaiters' top scorer with 16 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. He shot 8-for-11 from the floor and nabbed four rebounds in 33 minutes on the court.Teammates Jona Bermillo of Montreal, Nick Harvey of St. Bruno, Que., and Abdul Kamane, also from Montreal, added 13, 11 and nine points, respectively.

McGill succeeded on half of their 52 shots from the floor, including an impressive 52.6 per cent from three-point range (10/19) and went 19-for-33 from the stripe (57.6). Bishop's shot 53.7 from the floor (29/54), made eight of 22 from beyond the arc (36.4) but only went 7-for-16 on their free-throws.

The Redmen (3-1), who are tied for first in the Quebec league with six points, now have a five-week break for exams and holidays before resuming conference play when they host Laval (3-1) on Jan. 4. The winless Gaiters (0-4) will visit the Rouge et Or on Jan. 13 in the front-end of a home-and-home series.
