Citadins stun No.6 McGill in college hoops; Martlets implode in final frame as winless streak now at two

MONTREAL -- Jennifer Silver of Montreal registered a "double-double," but it was not enough as the Université du Québec à Montréal rallied from a seven-point deficit to outscore McGill 15-4 in the final stanza and upset the sixth-ranked Martlets 58-51 in women's basketball, Thursday, at the Centre Sportif de l'UQAM.

The loss dropped McGill's record to a surprising 0-2 in regular-season play for the first time since 2011-12, when the Martlets bounced back from that slow start to finish first at 11-5. The result also ended their three-game win streak over UQAM, dating back to a 55-48 setback on Nov. 21, 2015. McGill has emerged victorious in 36 of 58 lifetime confrontations with the Citadins.

The Martlets led 21-18 after the first quarter, 33-30 at halftime and appeared to be in control at 47-40 after three but completely self-destructed in the final frame.

Silver, a senior in medical school, scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight in the offensive zone. She shot 5-for-8 from the field, sank one of two free-throws, then added one assist, two blocks and three steals.

Véronique Boivin led the Citadins with 16 points. She shot 3-for-7 from the field, was a spectacular 10-for-10 from the foul-line, stole the ball twice and gathered a pair of rebounds. Teammate Jessica Lubin added 15 points, including 13 in the first half. The 6-foot-2 centre shot 6-for-16 from the field and was 3-for-4 from the stripe. She also collected nine rebounds, one assist, a block and four steals.

Forward Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., was McGill's top scorer with 14 points. The psychology senior was 6-for-13 from the field and 2-for-3 from the line. She grabbed seven rebounds to go along with an assist, one steal and a game-high five blocked shots. Teammate Geraldine Cabillo-Abante, a physical education sophomore from St. Laurent, Que., tallied eight points and corralled two rebounds in 22 minutes of court-time.

UQAM had a 40-35 edge in rebounds, a 25-21 advantage in turnovers and stole 14 balls compared to 10 by McGill. The Martlets, who held a 7-3 margin in blocks, shot 35.7 per cent from the field (20/56), a dismal 15.4 per cent (2/13) from three-point range and 69.2 per cent from the stripe (9/13). The Citadins shot 32.8 per cent from the field (19/58), including 2-for-10 from beyond the arc, and connected on 75 per cent of their free-throws (18/24).

UQAM (2-0) visits Concordia (1-1) on Saturday (Nov. 19). The Martlets (0-2) have a week to recover before hosting the Stingers in the second annual "Pots and Pans", make-lots-of-noise game at Love Competition Hall, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24. This is event is almost guaranteed to sellout with half the tickets already gone. To make it even sweeter than battling their crosstown rivals, the first 50 students to arrive at the game will get free a nifty "Crosstown Rivalry" T-shirt. BUY TICKETS

MARTLET MURMURS: McGill Athletics & Recreation will host the fifth annual Doug McDougall memorial blood donor clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 9:30 am to 5 pm at Tomlinson Hall, located inside the Sir Arthur Currie Gym at 475 Pine Avenue West. McDougall, who died in 2011, was well-known in the McGill community. His wife Sally Drury was a member of the ski team during her college days and their four sons all played varsity sports at McGill.
