No.8-ranked Redmen hoopsters shocked by Citadins in overtime thriller

MONTREAL – Senior Jenning Leung registered a "double-double" and scored a game-high 24 points but it was all in vain as the Université du Québec à Montréal upset No.8-ranked McGill -- playing with a severely depleted lineup -- with a stunning 80-77 overtime decision in men's college hoops at the Centre Sportif, Thursday.

It was only UQAM's (2-0) fourth victory in their last 19 confrontations with the Redmen (1-1), who fall into an early season second-place tie with Concordia (1-1) and Bishop's (1-1).

Greishe Clerjuste was one of three Citadins to reach double figures in scoring with 23 points. His supporting cast included Misi Boye and Ibrahim Sylla who scored 11 apiece off the bench.

In a game that featured 13 lead changes, McGill led 20-11 after the opening quarter but UQAM rallied to outscore their cross-town rivals 23-16 in the second, cutting the deficit to 36-34 at halftime. A strong third quarter gave the Citadins a 54-51 advantage heading into the fourth frame. McGill managed to keep it close down the stretch and freshmen Kendrick Jolin had a chance to give the Redmen the lead with 11 seconds left but only made one of two free-throws to instead tie the game. Clerjuste attempted an open three at the buzzer but could not connect.

In the extra five-minute stanza, the back-and-forth battle continued and it came down to the final minute once again. After an old fashion three-point play by Jolin put the Redmen ahead by two with a 65 seconds remaining, UQAM's Boye took over. He drained a long-distance bomb with 50 seconds left then answered right back with a jumper at the eight-second mark. Leung, had a chance to tie at the buzzer but his shot was off the mark. When it was all said and done the Citadins outscored McGill 9-6 in the extra session to earn a hard-fought victory.

Leung, a 6-foot-1 guard from the Philippines, went 8-for-23 from the field including two long-range treys. The psychology major also made six of 10 free-throws and tallied 10 rebounds, two assists and one steal.

The only other Redmen to reach double digits in scoring was the aforementioned Jolin and sophomore Avery Cadogan, who had 16 and 12 points, respectively. Junior Noah Daoust, a 6-foot-8 centre from Dorval, Que., also gave a valuable 36-minute effort, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with six points and a pair of assists.

McGill had a 51-43 rebounding advantage but lost the turnover battle 23-10, resulting in a 21-8 disadvantage in points scored from miscues. They shot 41.3 per cent from the floor (26/63) and drained only five of 20 treys, compared to UQAM, which shot 34.6 (27/78) and made five of 21 from beyond the arc. Both teams got to the line a healthy amount of times. McGill went 20-for-32 from the stripe while the Citadins were 21-for-30.

UQAM will only have one day to rest as they travel to take on Concordia this Saturday at 6 p.m. The Redmen, on the other hand, have a full week off until they battle the  cross-town rival Stingers in the annual "Pots and Pans" make-some-noise game on Thursday, Nov. 24 at 8 p.m.

REDMEN RAP: The Redmen were missing stars Dele Ogundokun, Francois Bourque, Michael Peterkin and Sebastian Beckett who are overseas in Doha, Qatar representing Canada at the FIBA 3x3 All-Star Tournament this week... The FIBA tourney starts with the McGill squad taking on a team form Ljubljana in a quarter-final on Friday morning... McGill Athletics & Recreation will host the fifth annual Doug McDougall memorial blood donor clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 9:30 am to 5 pm at Tomlinson Hall, located inside the Sir Arthur Currie Gym at 475 Pine Avenue West. McDougall, who died in 2011, was well-known in the McGill community. His wife Sally Drury was a member of the ski team during her college days and their four sons all played varsity sports at McGill, including Todd McDougall, who starred for the basketball Redmen.
