Volleyball's Vercheval vexes Laval as McGill knocks off division leaders in Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY -- Rookie Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., registered 18 points as McGill rallied from a first set loss to defeat division-leading Laval 3-1 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Saturday, at Centre PEPS. The set scores were 16-25, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-16.

"We had a slow and shaky start, but managed to come back and started to put pressure on Laval," said Martlets head coach Rachele Beliveau. "The last three sets were quite good, and the last one in particular was very good."

Vercheval, a 6-foot-2 physical education freshman, earned her points on the strength of 15 kills and four stuff blocks, to go along with a team-high 15 digs.

Myriam Robitaille and Rowan Fletcher also reached double-figures in scoring for McGill. Robitaille, a French language and literature junior from Terrebonne, Que., had nine kills, an ace, and three blocks for 11.5 points. Fletcher, a political science freshman from Montreal, tallied 10 points, courtesy of eight kills and three blocks.

Thara Dawoodjee, a junior from Ottawa who is in her first season as starting setter, racked up 40 assists and a dozen digs in the contest. Teammate Marie-Eve Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., recorded five points and eight digs.

"Dorion came in from the bench and did an outstanding job on serve receiving, stabilizing our team," said Beliveau of her 5-foot-8 power hitter. The physical education senior finished the match with a remarkable 2.73 passing ratio (out of three).

Alice Cloutier led the Rouge et Or with 15.5 points, and Rachel Trottier posted a game-high 17 digs.

The Martlets had an 11-3 margin in stuff blocks and a 46-43 edge in kills, while Laval held a 9-6 advantage in service aces and a 60-55 difference in digs.

McGill (4-3) visits Sherbrooke (3-4) on Nov. 18. The Rouge et Or (4-2) play Montreal (4-2) that same evening.
