MONTREAL --
Guillaume Laverdiere scored twice as the Lac St-Louis Tigers, a boys midget espoir team, defeated the McGill women's hockey squad 4-1, Friday, in the annual battle of the sexes at McConnell Arena.
The Martlets have now dropped five of eight confrontations with boys teams since head coach
Peter Smith began the annual experiment to give his Martlets a highly-competitive preseason schedule.
"We created a lot of scoring chances," said Smith. "It's hard to get pucks through on those guys, but it was a good game for us. This was another stepping stone in our development, and I think that game will help us down the road."
The Tigers had a 29-22 edge in shots, including a 13-4 margin in the middle stanza. The Martlets were 0-for-4 on the power play, and killed both of their shorthanded situations..
Laverdiere goals came just 31 seconds apart to open the second period, at 0:55 and 1:26.
Rookie forward
Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., scored McGill's lone goal, her third marker of the exhibition season, at 14:50 of the middle frame, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
Jade Downie-Landry of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and
Marie-Philip Lavoie of Pohenegamook, Que., were credited with the assists.
Jack Lepage regained a two-goal margin for the Tigers at 19:26 of the second and
Danny Dio Ciccarello put the game out of reach at 15:40 of the third.
"I liked our game today," added Smith. "I thought we played with good structure and pace. On the first couple shifts of the second period and the last shift of that period we gave up three goals, and it was just a little bit unfortunate because I thought the rest of the way we were pretty good."
McGill rookie goaltender
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., who has started all nine games to date, stopped 25 of 29 shots in a losing cause.
Thomas Scarfone and
Jake McGregor split time in net for the Tigers, with Scarfone starting and collecting the win. He stopped all seven shots faced before being replaced at the midway mark with McGregor, who allowed one goal on 15 shots.
McGill, which dropped to 4-5-0 in exhibition play, will finish their extensive preseason schedule next week with three road games in as many days against NCAA opponents. They visit Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 14, followed by games at Yale in New Haven, Conn., and Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H.
