CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., notched her 100th career goal as McGill blanked Harvard 3-0 in a women's hockey battle of deep thinkers at the Bright-Landry Center, Friday.
It was McGill's fifth consecutive victory over an NCAA Div. 1 program and their first ever win over the Crimson. The result improved the Martlets lifetime mark to 1-10-1 against the Ivy League school, halting a five-game losing streak, dating back to a 2-2 tie on Oct. 23, 2010.
Daoust, a fifth-year physical education senior, hit her milestone marker on a power-play to make it 2-0 at 16:09 of the third period. With a career record of 100-123-223, she became just the sixth player in Martlets history to reach the century mark, in only her 113th appearance. The team saved the puck and made a presentation to her after the game to celebrate the achievement. Forward
Nicole Howlett, a psychology sophomore from Tsawwassen, B.C., was credited with an assist on the play.
"We had a bit of a slow start but gained momentum as the game went on," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "We moved the puck and supported it well. The big thing for me is we got great goaltending.
Tricia Deguire was real good again tonight."
Deguire, a rookie goalie from Sherbrooke, Que., stopped 25 shots to earn her fourth career shut-out in just 10 games played. The 5-foot-7 education freshman has started in all preseason contests to date and owns a 5-5 record with a stingy 1.80 goals-against average and a sparkling .930 save percentage.
"She's done really well," added Smith of his young starter. "She's having fun. She lends a lot of confidence to the rest of her team, that's for sure."
Jade Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 freshman from St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., scored what proved to be the game-winner at 3:53 of the middle frame, after a scoreless opening stanza.
Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., and
Cassidy Bell of Baldonnel, B.C., recorded assists, combining for an all-rookie trio on the play.
"It was kind of a goal-mouth scramble and Jade came in a poked it into the back of the net," explained Smith. "It was just a hard work kind of goal. Jade's playing very well. It's been a big step from CÉGEP hockey to the CIS and she's working hard to make it happen."
Olivia Ramos of New Westminster, B.C., tallied the extra insurance marker into an empty net with six seconds remaining, to earn her first career goal. The arts freshman hit the target after a selfless pass from Howlett.
Sidonie Chard, another rookie from Kingston, Ont., also earned a helper.
Brianna Laing started and took the loss in net for Harvard, allowing one goal on 11 shots in 29:55. Teammate
Molly Tissenbaum relived her midway through the game and saved 19 of 20 shots in 29:27.
McGill had a 33-25 margin in shots and 33-24 advantage in the faceoff circle. The Martlets were 1-for-6 on the power play and killed off all five penalties.
McGill (5-5) takes on Yale at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 15) before rounding out their preseason schedule at Dartmouth on Sunday. The Crimson (0-1-0) open their regular season against Dartmouth on Oct. 23.
