Ravens ruffle Martlets feathers in low-scoring hoops affair


OTTAWA. -- Alex Kiss-Rusk a recorded a "double-double" but it was not enough as Carleton surprised McGill 51-46 in an ugly affair, Friday, at the Ravens' Nest. The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Martlets who dropped to 10-2 in preseason play.
 
Carelton led 14-6 after the opening quarter and 24-19 at halftime. Both teams scored an identical 14 and 13 points over the final two frames.
 
Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre from Beaconsfield, Que., tallied 18 points and added 13 rebounds. She shot 7-for-17 from the field and 4-for-4 from the charity-stripe, in addition to three blocks, a pair of steals and one assist.

McGill had a 38-32 rebounding advantage, a 12-4 lead in steals and a 4-0 margin in blocks. Both teams committed an identical 21 turnovers.

Frederique Potvin and Gladys Hakizimana also reached double digits in scoring for the Martlets.

Potvin, 5-foot-10 transfer guard from Pittsburgh, scored 13 points but struggled from the field, shooting just 5-for-18 including a 1-for-10 performance from beyond the arc. The social work student was also 2-for-2 from the foul-line and added three assists, three steals, and one block. Hakizimana, a second-year guard from Montreal, returned from injury to score 10 points in 24 minutes of court time. The reigning RSEQ rookie of the year was 4-for-8 from the floor. She knocked down one from downtown and was 1-of-2 from the line. 

The Ravens had three of their own players reach double digits in points. Catherine Traer had 12, Nicole Gilmore dropped 11 and Heather Lindsay scored 10.

McGill shot 32.1 per cent from the floor (18/56), sank two of 15 attempts from three-point range, and was 8-for-12 from the stripe (66.7 per cent). Carleton replied with 34.6 per cent (18/52) from the field, 33.3 from beyond the arc (7/21) and went 8-for-10 on free-throws.

The Martlets will stay in the nation's capital and look to get back in the win column against the University of Ottawa Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
