MONTREAL --
Maud Chapleau of L'Épiphanie, Que., tallied 14 points as Laval swept McGill 16-25, 18-25 and 22-25 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
Chapleau, a 20-year-old criminology freshman, earned her points on the strength of 11 kills, one ace and two stuff blocks.
The Martlets were led by third-year middle blocker
Myriam Robitaille with 13 points, and 6-foot-2 freshman power-hitter
Claire Vercheval, who scored a dozen.
"We're talented but very young, so it's going to take a few matches in this league to get used to the level of play," noted McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau, whose troops posted an impressive 8-2 preseason record in games against non-Quebec teams but are 0-2 since the regular campaign began."We had a good preseason, but we didn't play the same calibre of opponents that we're facing in the RSEQ, so we'll need to adjust to that."
Robitaille, a French language and literature student from Terrebonne, Que., had nine kills, an ace, and three blocks, along with a trio of digs. Vercheval, who hails from Ste. Julie, Que., registered 12 kills and was credited with five digs. Teammate
Thara Dawoodjee, a physical education junior from Ottawa who is in her first season as the Martlets' starting setter, racked up a game-high 36 assists in the contest.
McGill (0-2) next plays host to Montreal (2-0) on Oct. 29 at Love Competition Hall. Laval (1-0) takes on UQAM (0-1) on Oct. 28.
