Potvin pots plethora of points, pushes Martlet cagers win streak to four

MONTREAL -- Frederique Potvin of Ste. Julie, Que., scored 20 points as McGill defeated Dalhousie 79-50 on Day 2 of the 22nd annual Redbird Classic women's basketball tournament at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

It was the first Martlets meeting with Dal since a 73-65 win on Oct. 24, 2009 and stretched the team's current win streak to four while improving their preseason record to 9-1.

Potvin, a first-year social work student who transferred from the NCAA's University of Pittsburgh, sank six of 11 three-pointers and shot 7-for-14 overall. The 5-foot-10 guard also grabbed one rebound and had five assists and a steal.

McGill led 22-15 after the first quarter, 45-22 at the half and carried a 65-28 margin into the final frame.

Alex Kiss-Rusk of Beaconsfield, Que., and Jennifer Silver of Montreal also reached double-digits in scoring, each with 10 points. Kiss-Rusk, a 6-foot-4 centre, shot 5-for-7 from the field and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, including six in the defensive zone. She was also credited with five assists, one block and a steal. Silver, a senior, was an identical 5-for-7 from the floor and collected seven rebounds. She led all players with four steals, in addition to one assist and a block.

Sophomore Geraldine Cabillo-Abante of St. Laurent, Que., tallied seven points, one rebound, an assist and a pair of steals. She shot 3-for-6 from the field, including 1-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Deidre Alexander, a 5-foot-8 guard from Woodstock, N.B., led the Tigers with 13 points, three rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

The Martlets had a 33-27 lead in rebounds, a 2-1 edge in blocks, a 20-12 advantage in turnovers, and stole 14 balls compared to six by Dalhousie. McGill shot an impressive 48.5 per cent from the field (33/68) and 42.3 per cent (11/26) from three-point range but struggled from the charity stripe, going just 2-for-7. The Tigers shot 33.3 per cent (19/57) from the field, including 4-for-14 from downtown, and went 8-for-12 on free-throws.
