KINGSTON, Ont --
Spencer Bromley scored six goals and
Emile Sassone-Lawless tallied a goal and five assists as McGill routed Queen's 20-4 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play, Saturday.
The win improved McGill's record to 10-1 in the CUFLA East Division heading into Sunday's season finale showdown for first with the undefeated Trent Excalibur (11-0). The game is slated for a 1:30 pm start on Forbes Field.
McGill was without head coach
Tim Murdoch for the first time in his 14-year tenure since he took over in 2002. Although the results are still credited to the head coach, it ended his personal streak of 235 consecutive games behind the bench. He has a family commitment and was unable to coach the team this weekend. His status for Sunday's confrontation with Trent is uncertain.
In Murdoch's absence, the team was handled by volunteer coaches
Nick Soubry and
Simon Hudson, both former players with the Redmen. It seemed that it didn't really matter who was behind the bench in Kingston as the game was over almost before it started. McGill struck for seven consecutive goals in the first 11 minutes. The Redmen led 9-1 after the opening quarter, 11-1 at halftime and 15-2 after three, then outscored the Gaels 5-2 in the final stanza.
A dozen different Redmen players scored goals and that is believed to be a team record.
Alex Linton,
Kieran McKay and
Cal Callahan scored twice apiece. Single went to
Goose Bolton,
Liam MacDonald,
Jay Jiranek,
Rhys Burnell,
Brendan Mullen,
Cyrus Wickersham and
Naoll Degife.
Chris Boushy led the Gaels with two goals, while singles went to
Riley Venton and
Jackson Rakcozy.
Starting goaltender
William Waesche played the first half and allowed 1 goal on 12 shots.
Conor Manahan took over at halftime and saved three of five shots before giving way to third-stringer
David Pelliccione who conceded only one goal on shot four shots in just under 11 minutes of playing time.
The top three teams in the CUFLA East will host a home playoff game in the first round. The opponent will not be determined until the end of the weekend, although it will be either Ottawa, or Nipissing or Queen's.
