NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A third-period goal by
Mallory Souliotis of Acton, Mass., held up as the Yale University Bulldogs nipped McGill 1-0 in women's preseason hockey at Ingalls Rink, on Saturday.
The result snapped the Martlets win streak over NCAA Div 1 programs at five and dropped their lifetime record against the Bulldogs to 10-6-2 overall.
Souliotis, a biomedical engineering junior, notched her goal at 3:34 of the final period. She was assisted by team captain
Krista Yip-Chuck of Whitby, Ont., and
Eden Murray of Medicine Hat, Alta.
"We outshot them and out-chanced them, but we couldn't outscore them," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "Once again we got great goaltending. But I didn't think we were very good in the first period at all and our goaltender kept us in it."
The Martlets held a 32-28 edge in shots and won 26 of 48 faceoffs. They went 0-for-3 on the power play and killed off all five infractions taken.
Martlets netminder
Tricia Deguire, a freshman from Sherbrooke, Que., made 27 saves in the losing cause. The 19-year-old has started in all 11 preseason contests, amassing a 5-6-0 record.
"In the second period we started to play," added Smith, whose squad led 14-3 on the shot clock in the middle frame. "Our girls got a little bit more momentum going their way. We were good in the second period; we outshot them by a lot but couldn't score.
"The third was a good period of hockey, back-and-forth," he continued. "We made one little error in the defensive zone and our goaltender didn't have a chance and it ended up in the back of our net. Even after that we had so many chances to score, but the puck just seemed to jump over our stick and we couldn't convert."
Senior goalie
Hanna Mandl of Nobleton, Ont., earned the shutout for Yale, turning away 32 McGill shots.
McGill (5-6) closes its preseason schedule at Dartmouth on Sunday (Oct. 16) at 3 p.m.. The Bulldogs (1-0) will open their regular season against RIT with a pair of games on Oct. 21 and 22.
